A1000 Kickstart Disk
« on: July 08, 2004, 09:23:34 AM »
Hi folks!
I managed to lose my A1000's Kickstart disk. I got lost when I moved house. Is there anywhere where the disk can be purchased or maybe downloaded legally? I hope it will pop up afterall but that remains to be seen.
Thanks for any help!

I could mail you a copy of my Kickstart disk.  I do not think that Commodore or Gateway cares anymore.   :-)
My favorite TV shows:  Star Trek Voyager, Forever Knight, Stargate SG1, Married with Children, As Time Goes By, Mr. Bean, Smallville, The Six Million Dollar Man, and Xena

Someone mailing a disk is probably going to be the easiest (only) way.

As for the legality, well, AFAIK, the A1000 is clear to use any 1.x kickstart disk.  And the disk would be useless to anyone who didn't own an A1000, as you still wouldn't be able to use the kickstart without an Amiga.  (ie, a PC couldn't read the disk to extract the file for use in UAE, or whatever.)  I'd say you're in the clear to mail a copy of a kickstart disk.

Well, it is in fact illegal..

Just like you aren't entitled to free wb disks if you got a used A500 without them..

Amiga Inc likened it to a used car: if you don't get the manual / jack / whatever when you buy a used car, you aren't entitled to free ones from the manufacturer, the car is sold as is.

Such is life. Luckily there's the internet where you can illegally download things like this with the minimum of hassle. ;-)

You have it wrong. This situation is nothing like a car.

For the record Commodore did provide a free (+shipping and media cost) new kickstart disks upon request.

Not so sure about that, though.  For example, the local Commodore authorized shop used to offer free workbench / kickstart disks to replace any damaged disk you brought in.  Of course, who's to say they weren't bending/breaking the rules to do that.

Anyhow, downloading isn't going to do this poor chap any good, because even if he DOES find a kickstart disk image (very rare, as opposed to the ROM images, which are everywhere), he'll have no way to write it back to a disk.  :-(

I have it right, that's how the dude at Amiga Inc. explained it to me. I don't remember his name now, but I probably still have the emails somewhere..

You don't get WB disks even though they are a part of the OS (and you already own a part in the kickstart chip).

Amiga Inc or possibly KMOS owns the OS now.. The terms have changed from the Commodore times..

I was given the reason that they can't give the old versions out, because the new versions are based on them + there is software that they have licensed. Thus they're not allowed to spread the stuff without the licensers permission.

Go figure.. I don't know for sure if that's really a valid reason, or do they have delusions of actually making money with the 1.x stuff. (well, Cloanto seems to be mildly successful at that..)

Amiga Inc. don't own anything and KMOS has said nothing (I don't expect to hear any noise from that direct either).

Anyway, I see no problem with providing someone with an A1000 kickstart disk when they own an Amiga 1000.

If you have any concerns about this send an Email to KMOS, asking them to sue you.

Going back to your car analogy... You buy your car, but you replace the battery, You forget to note down the Radio code... The car manufacturer will provide you with the Radio code.

Is it?

How is getting something you already own illegal?
I'd say thats fair use and while thats an official thing in the US the concept does exist in other countries.

Besides, when I first got an A1000 they included originals of WB 1.1 but copies of WB 1.2.

My second A1000 didn't have any originals but I already own them anyway as I have Amiga Forever.

To answer the original question... :)

Back when I fired up my A1000 for the first time (a few months back now!) I found that my Kickstart disk was knackered. Luckily I found a handy program on the Aminet which takes a standard ROM image (like you can download quite easily) and makes a bootable Kickstart disk from it. Works a treat for my A1000 (a very early one).

Can't remember what it's called, that program, but it's on there somewhere. Let me know if you can't find it, and I'll find out what it was.

Now that sounds like a cool program!

Seeing as this machine is about 19 years old and can only be used with a kickstart disc theres nothing wrong with getting a copy of the disc otherwise the machine is near to e=rubbish because you cant use it. :-o
