Stupid WorkBench Question
« on: June 03, 2004, 11:10:15 AM »
Hi Dudes

well, after an HD crash, im reinstalla all my whole sistem in my 1200, ppc mediator, etc

Well, installed 3.9 over a empty HD, and since he first boot, my Wb has the backdrop disabled, I mean, the Wb is in a window, and I have to go to the Workbench menu to disable it and got wb in the backdrop

Then I snapshot all, but, each time i boot up the machine, I have to do that again and again.

What the hell is causing that? Im almost sure is a file with the incorrect flags, but i dunno which file is.

Another good question is that, if I have installed OS 3.9 dozens of times and no toruble at all, why the hell have this occured now?

Thanks for your help

Try snapshot window instead of snapshot all and make sure the desktop is the active window (click once into the middle of the desktop before you open the menu).

The file to look at is envarc:sys/wbconfig.prefs.

Bye,
Thomas

Hi

Mayor problems with my 1200 setup

I was reinstalling all afetr and HD breakdown, an the very fisrt problem was that I couldnt change the Wb Window to brackdrop.

Well, this was solved, but as I went install the stuff, more troubles were appeairng.

I was suffering some hangingups when insterting cds, or if the icons on the cd was very big, like de MMCD one.

The icons of the unit appears of blue color!

I installed my mediator setup as always, picasso twice etc etc, attached voodoo to picasso prefs, and the magic started on the svga monitor.
Then reseted and the AGA comes to live again, and when I went to picasso prefs, the menu said that No board to attach! Tried to save a backdrop laer but the wbpatter prefs sais me that "wbpattern.prrefs couldnt be accessed"

This wierd things... a curiosity is that, when I install on emtpy HD (I tested severaltimes) when installing the maths libs, a requesters siys me "XXXXX.library is protected to delete" delete or skip . I think that there cant be any library, protected or not in the HD, since there is nothing on it

PLEASE HELP! im totally disappointed

Best regards and thank you in advance

When you install from scratch, which file system do you use to mount the CD ? Probably it marks all files on the CD read-only and these flags are copied to HDD either.

Perhaps you have to protect dh0:#? +wd all before you reboot after installation.

Thomas

Had a go at this under UAE today, and had exactly the same problem when trying to do a fresh install from scratch.

Got it sorted, but I ended up installing 3.5, then copying 3.9 to another partition, un-write-protecting that copy, then doing the 3.5 upgrade routine.  Trying to do it straight to 3.9 it missed assigns, complained about write protection etc, no matter what I did :(.

This was as a trial run before doing it for real. I think I'll stick with the same system there, unless anyone thinks of a better way (?).

@ Holley,

I've had to copy that way before. The best tool to use is Reaction Pref's, I think I have the name right. Unprotect on the fly.

AFAIK you need to install 3.1 first, then do the update.  I have never had a problem when doing this.  I also use the patched libs from setpatch.

mmm, according to the installer as long as you boot from the 3.9 emergency floppy you can go straight to 3.9.  I'll have to go find that prefs addon, as I really don't want to fart around with that on the real thing! (plenty of time for testing - my desk is piled high with all kinds of rubbish ATM :()

On WinUAE you can definitely install 3.9 directly from CD, no need to install anything other before, not even a WB ADF.

Here is how to do it: http://home.t-online.de/home/thomas-rapp/os39uae.html

Installing 3.9 on a real Amiga using the emergency disk is much the same. Just make sure that the emergency disk works and contains the correct drivers. If you use CacheCDFS to read the CD, no files will be write protected.

Hmmm, I used the version of CacheCDFS that came on the original OS 3.5 CD, but was trying to make it work straight from the emergency disk to a blank harddisk image.  Anyway, it's done now - the real one will be more interesting as it hasn't been cleared off for years, and I know theres going to be lots of stuff that I've forgotten how to set up ...

Solved

It was the cd filesystem that came on the BPPC.

It appears to mount the cdrom as read only and cpiy the files as is.

Used an mountlist and cachecdfs intead of BPPC cd filesystem, and everything worked fine

Best Regards and Thank you or the help!
