What does this mean?

Hi,

I bought an old Amiga 500 from a fleamarket for 4 euros (~ $5). After looking at the bottomside I noticed a peculiar little thing: take a look at http://www.rootshell.be/~agency/amiga500_small.jpg - you can see yourself. Could this mean something special or do I just get it wrong?

I bought the Omen trilogy on DVD a while back.  It was supposed to be a special and numbered limited edition.  The number box is blank.  Grr.

I've just looked at my A500 (circa 89) and the serial no label is in a slightly different font type.

All info is the same EXCEPT that my A500 is 5v DC 2.5A, not 4.5A.

Also, there is a second barcode label positioned above the serial no label.  The number is very short in that it matches the serial number!  No other info appears on this label.

The actual serial number font is nothing like yours.  The type is the same as you see at the bottom of bank cheques, and it's been printed after the label. Yours does not ring true.

Hmm. Is the serial number plate somekind of scam or false? It _could_ be counterfeited, but can't see any reason for anyone to do it and sell it to flea market. Strange, anyway.

What are other serial numbers? It would be nice to see a few for a reference (from matching year, perhaps).

I believe you that it isn't a photoshop scam, but a real serial "1" would be written like this:

#000000000001 and not just a simle 1.

I have one of the erliest A1000-keyboards and it is written:


Made in Malaysia
#00000000129
(version be/ch)

I think you have been cheated, but for that small amount you spent.

I think a bunch of developer machines were equipped with that serial number - it was discussed somewhere a couple of years ago. So nothing unique but no idea how many number ones were manufactured.

That probably isn't a developer machine either, but that factory for some reason started to print the serial number on a paper sticker along with a barcode, instead of printing it on the silver plastic sticker.

These have popped up in the past, and will do so in the future. This A500 isn't very special. :-)
