BOCHS, WineX, PC-X, Win95/98 etc and EMS software?
« on: April 16, 2004, 01:36:55 PM »
Ok I know it's unlikely anyone here is familiar with EMS software, but what they hell I'll give it a shot:-) Anyone here familar with Jonhson Controls - Metasys software?

Ok failing that I still have some juicy questions.
1) BOCHS: I am pretty unfamiliar with it. Does it work pretty good? Will it run at least Win95? Can it use the host's network connection?
2)WineX: Havn't played with too much, but can an application running on it be made to use the host's network connection?
3)PC-X: real stretch here for sure, but same as above. Can it use the host's network? Also anyone PCX working on MorphOS?
Someone has to state the obvious and that someone is me!

BOCHS: BOCHS can run Win2K if you want to. :P  I think you can tweak the display, but by default you won't get anything past 648x480x4 (bare VGA).  The version I've got on MOS doesn't have sound or network support and won't work with OS/2.  Don't know if a newer version does or not.  It doesn't have a JIT and it's fairly slow.  A game benchmarked it as being a 17mHz Pentium on my Peg1/G3/600. ;)

WineX: Never used it.

PCx: Doesn't work on MOS.  Someone said that PCTask works.  But, I didn't have luck with PCTask 3.3.  It won't read floppies from my Catweasel.  When I get curious enough, I might attempt to set up a hardfile on my A1200 and then move it over to my Peg and try it out.

Isn't WineX PC only?

Oh, and you have to pay for it :-(

WineX is optimised for games only.  For apps I'd recommend Wine.  If you're looking for something easier to setup then I'd suggest Crossover Office from CodeWeavers.  It's got a really easy GUI installer program for Windows apps.  All of these products support network connections (if using standard network APIs).  For instance, I have IE and mIRC running with Wine.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

I just noticed you said EMS.  Wine isn't made to run DOS executables, as it's not an emulation package.

EMS as in Energy Management System. The program in question is Win32(95/98), not dos. I am leaning towards emulation though for several reasons. Does BOCHS have the ability to use the native system's modem?

I don't know about BOCHS, but I've seen some incarnation of Wine successsfully running LotusNotes over DHCP ethernet.

Oh, okay I was thinking EMS == Expanded Memory Specification that was used in DOS.  Sorry, no experience with your EMS.

From Bochs user guide:

The serial port (single 16550A UART emulation) is usable, on GNU/Linux, NetBSD, OpenBSD, FreeBSD and MacOSX as host and guest. On other OSes the emulation is present, but the connection to hard- or software of the host is not implemented yet.
