Scart to HDMI Problem for Amiga 500
« on: June 26, 2024, 09:26:31 PM »
Hi everyone,

I signed up because I'm having a real problem trying to connect my Amiga to my Samsung 4K television. I don't want to take up too much of everyone's time, so I'll be as brief as possible and would appreciate any advice.

I have an Amiga 500 and a recently purchased RGB Scart lead. When I connect the Scart lead directly to an old television, the Amiga works fine. Decent picture, sound etc.

I have no Scart connection on my main television however, so I purchased a cheap Scart to HDMI converter -

It didn't work as it wouldn't produce a picture only sound. I soon learned this wasn't compatible with RGB.

Fine I thought. So I purchased this more expensive one that I understood was RGB compatible.

Yet the problem remains. No picture, just sound. On two different HD/4K televisions, a Samsung and a Sharp.

I'm at a loss as to what is going on? Can anyone help me at all? Are all these boxes useless?

Many thanks for your time.

Just for reference the RGB lead was from this guy Ian, and I set it all up exactly how he does in this video -

The best way to get a picture from Scart, you should buy an OSSC or an Retrotink 5x.
Scart to HDMI converter does not work very well for Amiga, other game consoles and other computers.

These Scart to HDMI converter are only for watching video tapes or DVD's. It also add some lag.

I also tested Scart to HDMI converter, OSSC and Retrotink 5x. In the future I also want to buy the Retrotink 4k.

Thanks very much for the reply.

I fully appreciate there are better options, but at this point I don't want (and can't afford) to fork out a lot of money for one. The unit that I've got seems to sell very well and by all accounts does a job - even if a minimal one - for others, but I can't get it to work for me at all. And I'm perplexed as to why. Sound but no picture; and there's definitely no fault with the Amiga itself, or the RGB lead I have. And I can find nothing on issues with particular models of television.

I suppose I could be unlucky enough to have a faulty unit, so I will have to try another and see what happens. Before I did that though I thought I'd ask the question here incase there was something I'm missing or wasn't privy to.

What's better if price is not an object, OSSC or Retrotink 5x?

Both are good options. The OSSC needs more time when swtiching from non laced screen to lace screen, but the Retrotink 5x has not have this problem.

Thanks for that. It looks like a variant of the one I've got but I'll take a look. Willing to trial a few to be honest if I can find one eventually that works. May purchase another RGB cable as well.

Connecting old tech like the Amiga to modern TVs can be tricky. Those Scart to HDMI converters can be hit or miss, especially with RGB signals. Sometimes the cheaper ones just don't handle it right. I had a similar issue with my retro setup. What finally worked for me was investing a bit more in a converter that specifically mentioned RGB compatibility and had good reviews from other retro gamers. It's annoying when you buy something expecting it to work and it doesn't.

Thanks for the input. It does seem rather inconsistent sadly.

Can you tell me which one you ended up with?
