Installing 3.9
« on: March 17, 2004, 12:16:00 PM »
Hi all,

Hopefully, the postman will bring me OS3.9 today!  I am planning to install it on my A4000 on a fresh 3.2Gb harddrive.  I was wondering how big poeple think the Workbench partition should be/how big theirs is (easy)?  I tend to keep this partition for Workbench only (no apps apart from apart from Workbench specific tools and the like).  Is 100Mb enough or is that a bit conservative?

Cheers.

My WB partition is over 1Gb I think, but with OS3.9 and all the extras/patches etc I'm only using 90Mb of it.  I've got plenty of room left on my 20Gb HD, so I'm not worried about the waste of space in there :-D

100Mb should be fine, but better make it 200 just to make sure :-)

--edit--

that includes all the internet software (plus more that I've got since then), but all the cache's are on a different partition.

That is certainly a bit conservative...  :-)  I think I'm using about 200 MB right now. I myself have a 10.2 GB harddrive and I have set up 2GB as the system partition where Workbench is installed.

It also depends on what you are going to do. If you want's a lots of fancy fonts and a lots of fancy 24 bit .png icons, it certainly takes some more place. If I where you I would use about 300-500 MB as the system partition.

Hi jonssonj

PNG icons (~32x32), takes quite the same space as OS3.9 GlowIcons.

Ciao

Thanks for the replies.  I'll think I'll go for somewhere in the middle - about 300Mb.  Unfortunately, it is a bit acedemic now as the postie has been and gone and he didn't have my package with him.  Fingers crossed for tomorrow!

Just a hint: before you change the hardware, boot from your old hdd, insert the OS3.9 CD, start the installation script, create an emergency boot disk and make sure it works.

Then replace the HDD by the new one, boot from the emergency disk and use the supplied tools to partition the HDD and install AmigaOS.

This way the installation should be very smooth.

Bye,
Thomas

Ask an Amiga dealer in your area. For Germany I'd suggest

http://www.kdh-datentechnik.com/
http://www.vesalia.de
http://www.schatztruhe.de

AFAIK all of them do international shipping, too.

You don't get a manual with OS3.9 because there is none. You can buy "The AmigaOS 3.9 Book", but it is rather a tips & hints collection for people already familar with earlier versions of AmigaOS than a manual.

You should count about 40 Euro (50 US$) for the OS and 15 Euro (20 US$) for the book.

Bye,
Thomas

Hi,

I use a 100 meg partition, for my boot section.

Now before you try to install make sure your A4000 has the 3.1 roms, mine don't and I can't install OS 3.5 or 3.9 on my A4000, looks like I will have to go to the bank and get check so I can buy 3.1 rom set.

I would say about 500 myself.  On my Amiga4000 "Pluto" I have a 1.2GB in it. Amiga4000 "Cecilia" has some Raptor SCSI drives  waiting for her, once I get around to changing her Super Buster (icky rev 9, but I'm up for SMD soldering).  He he the Amiga200 will just have to do with WB 3.0.  But do you really need more then that for Toaster work ?

I'm also think how good UAE would run on my G3. Oh well. Back to drinkin :pint:
