WarpEngine - jumper settings
« on: March 19, 2004, 11:22:35 AM »
Hi guys,

I really need some help with this one :-(

I have a WarpEngine 4040, that I'm going to use in my A4k tower. I have two problems with it... first of all, half the times I'm trying to boot the A4k, then it won't boot, and second of all, when I get it to boot, then the computer only recognizes 64 MB ram even though I have put 2 x 32 and 2 x 16 on it.

The ram problem.

I downloaded the manual, using the link on www.amiga-hardware.com, and also looked at the schematics at the page. According to this, I have installed 32 MB on slot 1, 16 MB on slot 2, 32 MB on slot 3 and the last 16 MB on slot 4, all modules single sided. This should give me a total of 96 MB ram. Unfortuanately it doesn't. I tried to set varius jumpers, but with no luck.

On JP2 I have used the following setting; jumpers on B and D, and no jumpers on the rest.

I'm not going to use SCSI devices with this card, even though it has a SCSI controller, so jumpersettings on H, J and K should all be set to off, as I can see it. Because I don't use SCSI devices, then I haven't put a jumper on JP1, which says "termination power not supplied to SCSI bus".

As I'm using this card on an A4k, then JP3 and JP4 shouldn't concern the operation of my card.

I saw a strange thing on my card. It has a jumper called JP5, but it's not mentioned neither in the manual or on the schematics from www.amiga-hardware.com. Anyone knows what this jumper is used for?

The boot problem.

When I power up the A4k it doesn't always boot up. I checked all cables, connectors, basicly everything that is to check, but still the same. Anyone experienced the same? I guess it could be a matter of jumper settings. I sure hope so, so hopefully someone can give me the correct jumper settings for my card.

An additional question :

Is anyone using a kicktool with this card, in order to use Kickstart3.1? Which program should I use?

Thanks in advance

hi,

so you have no ram on the mobo? mhh!! try to install some.

Seems that some apps, searches those address to works properly (old programs and so)

Ciao

PS- even the SIMMs aren't installed correctly.

try to fit with this order:.

32+32+16 (if you want a contiguos 80MB RAM block)

OR

32+32+16+16 BUT the last 16MB are not of the same block.

Read the manual again :-)

Hi,

I own a old and broken WarpEngine 4033. It was a really a great board.

I suggest to put the 32MB into slot 4 and 3, the 16MB to slot 2 and 1. Remove all Jumpers at JP2, except Jumper L.
Please refer page 23 + 24 of the manual.

Please enable JP1, even if you not have any SCSI-device.
Maybe it is better to put in a terminator into the SCSI-slot, even if it should work without it.

I've used "devkick" and kickstart 40.68 with the warpengine. I think, it was a test-system from commodore.
Worked fine ;)

And it is absolutely recommended to put 1MB or better 4MB onto the Motherboard

Greetings

@framiga

I tried putting the simms as 16 + 16 + 32 + 32, as 32 + 32 +16 + 16, as 16 + 32 +16 + 32 and as 32 + 16 + 32 + 16, and every setting only gives me 66 MB fast mem.

@cygnusEd

I will try the jumper settings you suggested, and I hope it helps.

@all
The manual suggest at some point, that for better operation, it's recommended that the ram on the mobo is put on the WarpEngine card instead, as it has faster ram access. But I will try to install 4 x 4 MB on the mobo, and see if it helps.

An update :

I tried changing the 2 x 32 mb simms with some other 32 MB simms I got, and now all 96 MB is recognized.

I tried the jumper settings suggested, and now it seems that the computer boots more often, but I have to do some further tests on that one, but I hope my troubles are over.

I can see that the L jumper isn't mentioned on www.amiga-hardware.com. What's it for? Anyone knows.

Now I just need to find devkick, but I can't find it on Aminet :-(

@framiga

Thanks for the link, but I already got the install disk, but WarpKick will not kick my ks3.1 file, so I guess I have to make one from the other A4k with Ks3.1, and hope that it helps.

@all

Unfortuanately, the computer still only want to boot up half of the times I try. Anyone got any ideas? I know it's not the mobo, as it has just arrived from amiga.fr last week.

I have a WarpEngine 3040.....
When I set mine up quite awhile ago I seem
to remember something about a jumper on the MOBO
near the CIA chips that had something to do with
timing on boot. As I remember it, if you had the
jumper set too fast it didn't allow the KickStart
immage to be loaded into ram thus unreliable boots.
This sounds like your problem.
Hope this helps

P.S. I don't have a manual and can't find my info
when I set mine up

Well, thanks for the info. The A3000 is always softkicked isn't it? But I will try to look it up on my mobo.

No .. not all A3k's were softkick. Mine was but
I installed the 3.1 roms for a hardkick.
But I beleave the kickstart is still copied over
into ram.I had to go to the burned in roms in order
to run the WarpEngine. I got my info from an Aussie
from down under ;-) He told me what I needed to do
to get it going and I'm sure that is where I got that
info on the jumper. It either involved the Rom chips
or maybe the CIA chips, most likely the Roms.
If the machine tried to boot too fast the boots would
be unreliable. As I remember it, it was on a per machine
basis, meaning that each machine could be different as to
the speed of the jumper setting.
I wish I could remember more about this, I lost a Harddrive
a few months ago and that info was on it.
Its worth checking into, as it sounds like your problem.

Hi melott,

yes right . . .it is a jumper labeled "ROM Speed" 160-200 . . .nice tip :-)

J151: ROM Speed: 160 or 200 ns ROMs.

1-2 Closed: 200 ns ROMs (default).
2-3 Closed: 160 ns ROMs.

Hmm, I tried setting the ROM speed jumper to 160, but it doesn't help; the computer still only want's to boot half the times.

But at this point I only need to get the Amiga to boot every time, as all the ram is being found. I hope that this card soon will start acting as it should, or else it's going for the trashcan!

Acts real funny, with those jumpers. I will try to get in touch with the man that designed this board, and I hope that it will help. If anyone have the mail adress for the manufacturer of this card, I will be really grateful.

I finally found the solution to my boot problem. It seems that I need to set the two jumpers (can't remember what they are called) to INT instead of EXT, as I thought it should be with all accelerator boards produced by other firms than Commodore.

But thanks to everyone who has helped.
