WTB: Buddah or similar Zorro IDE card

Found out that connecting DVD drive to a Vampire would slow the IDE down too much.  So looking for another way to connect the drive to A500

What do you mean by slow down? Any decent drive would spin 50x and Vampire IDE matches 10MB/s. Where is the slowing down happening, while copying from DVD to  HDD/CF?

Should mention the discussion at Apollo and their reasoning.

While the latest Buddha is probably out of range budget wise, maybe you can score an older XSurf. They have IDE ports too, just not very compatible and not boot enabled.

So I have seen another thread that suggest they have a CF drive and DVD drive connected to a vampire and they only had to set the ice to 6MBs to get it too work.  Not sure if they actually tested the xfer speed.

However 6MB whilst quite a bit slower than the 13MBs quoted speed of CF xfer alone, its still well faster I believe tan native IDE on A600 or A1200 or Zorro 2.  So think will just got with that.

Thoughts ?

Funny,  I was just logging on Amiga.org to ask the same question.

Like you, I have a vampire with the Checkmate 1500+ with the the zorro II/86 pin backplane.

I tried a buddha controller 20th anniversary in the zorro II slot.  It causes the Amiga to hang at boot.
I also tried a trumpcard pro.  it also causes the amiga to hang at boot if I have autoboot on.  If I turn autoboot off, on the trumpcard, I can get the vampire / A500 to boot.  I have not tried to mount devices later.

Oddly enough I could get the trumpcard pro to autoboot in an A2000 with the vampire in it.
The buddha in the same a2000/vampire would not autoboot, but would not stop the vampire from autobooting.

Just FYI,  I tried both the trumpard pro and the buddha in the A500/checkmate with zorro II and no vampire (ie just an 68000) and everything works fine with both zorro II cards.

Thanks this is good information to know, and has saved me spending even more money (Checkmate has ended up costing me a lot in extra parts , including the case getting on for £900  )

I easily spent more than this in the past on my A1200 and stuff

I think I am going to wait and see.  Vampire on its way from USA so will report back once I have all the parts will be able to tell the impact and If I can live with  it. Probelm is have a FastaATA in my amiga 1200 so anyhting will seem a fair bit slower I think.   And over the years got  used to 1200MBS on my macs lol so anyhting will seem slow

update.

I put my ACA-500 (not the plus) with a 1233N-40 in the checkmate 1500+ 86 pin expansion and a buddha ide 20th anniversary in the zorro-II slot, and everything is working well.

So the full configuration is as follows:
A500+
1 meg trap door expansion (total) of 2 megs chip
Indivision ECS
Checkmate with backboard
ACA-500 (again not the plus)
1233N-40
Buddha IDE

Everything seems to work.  Now I just need to try the slimline DVD drive.

Given that this is working so well, I might put vampire A500 back in an A2000.
