Kanet updates GEOS Megapatch, geoDOS 64, GeoConvert
« on: November 09, 2018, 12:31:28 AM »
=========== Forwarded message =============
(from "nonefornow" at the c-128.freeforums.net site)

Markus Kanet has updated the GEOS MegaPatch program.  A D81 containing the upgrade files for both C64 and C128 is available here.

https://gitlab.com/mkslack/Area6510/tree/master/releases/megapatch64_128

He also has made available the source code here

https://gitlab.com/mkslack/Area6510/tree/master/doc/megapatch64_128/current

Here below I am reporting his complete announcement.

"Hi there!

It has been a while... but after nearly 20 years a new release for GEOS MegaPatch V3.3 is available for download!

GEOS MegaPatch V3 is a system upgrade for GEOS 2.x. It supports many hardware devices like 1541,71,81, CMD FD,HD,RL, and as a new feature since the last release from 2003: Support for SD2IEC devices with NativeMode disk images up to 16Mb. Also additional SuperRAM drives up to 16Mb are possible (if you have Hardware like Ultimate64... or VICE).

MP3 also supports many RAM expansions like C=REU, GEORAM, RAMLink or RAMCard. It has a TaskManager which allows up to 8 Tasks active at the same time. You can switch between many applications using C=+CTRL (or using GEOS.TaskMSE and left+right mouse button). Requires lots of RAM!

I have tested this release with GEOS 2.0-US and GEOS 2.0r-US(GEORAM). On GEOS128 only GEOS 2.0(with C=REU) has been tested.

Note that this release does not include a DESKTOP manager. You need a DESKTOP application like DESKTOP (from GEOS 2.x), DualTop (my preferred DE), TOPDESK (used by many German users...) or GeoDOS (an GEOS application developed and updated in 2018 by myself).

The English release is based upon the same source code as the German release but has not been tested that much. Most of the translations are based on my very poor 20 years old English. Feedback is welcome!

The release can be downloaded here.

The Source Code is available as Plain Text here.

Please excuse my bad English since that is not my first language. If you have any questions i will give my best to help but technical English may be much more complicated.

Markus"

Oh how nice! First we get the AmigaOS 3.1.4, now a GEOS update! Things are rolling along nicely in Retro Land! I just tried GEOS on my 128 last week, but I only have a 1541 so it was a little slow. I want to try it again when I get a 1571.

I was going to post a new topic about MP3.3, but RobertB already beat me to it.

@RobertB your post is very complete.  Markus is up to MP3.3r5 in both English and German. And has further versions in experimental builds in German.

I tested the C64 version with the Turbo Chameleon 64 and it works very very well.
The TC64 with its 6510 accelerator and both REU, GeoRam emulation, and two emulated 1541 drives is a match made in heaven for a C64 user and modern GEOS builds.

Also I tested the c128 version in a C128D with two extra 1571s and a GGLABs geoRAM clone (which can currently be purchased with up to 4 megs of ram).   It works very well.

One other thing for English users, if you want to use TopDesk, which I personally prefer.  TopDesk 4.1 is on the original MP3.3 disks (not the later revisions of MP3.3rX).
The English version of MP3.3 has the English version of TopDesk 4.1.

I cannot seem to find newer versions of TopDesk above 3.2 in English anywhere else.  How about anyone else?

Here's neat cartridge for the C64 that adds a desktop GUI that looks and acts like an Amiga.  There are also a ton of built-in apps.  I wish something like this had been available at the height of the C64's life.  But, better late than never.

The desktop on the video is from the Final Cartridge III+, which is a new implementation of the classic Final Cartridge III.  The III+ has some added utilities.  The classic FC3 was available back in the day.
