Installing 3.1.4 without floppys
« on: January 13, 2019, 12:13:21 AM »
Life is grim.

Trying to install 3.1.4 on my A4000D but most of my old floppys are dead, I've found maybe 3 or 4 that are working but it's not enough. Isn't there an easier way to do this without using floppys? I don't have a gotek and I don't want to wait until I can get one. Is there an easy way to install the os from scratch without using floppys?

Yes, sure, you can put your Amiga IDE drive in a PC and there install 3.1.4 with WinUAE using the adf images.

@ Munchkin
I got 4 brand new floppies along with the ROMS when I ordered for both my 1200 and 4000. Who did you order from?

Doing it in UAE is likely to be by far the quickest option.

Are you using a compact flash card or a real hard drive? The former just requires a card reader, the latter might depend on what interface you have but there's options.

I got the download option so no floppies and no roms. I'll try and find someone with an eprom-programmer to do the roms for me.

Got it sorted now though, I did find enough floppies. Had I done an update I could have just mounted the adf's but I wanted to make a clean install, my WB was a real mess so it was about time.

Maybe he bought the digital download?

Assuming that is supplied as a set of ADF files, and he is able to copy/download those onto the Amiga's hard disk, there are various tools on Aminet etc. for mounting ADFs so that they are visible to the OS as a normal floppy disk.

They are supplied as ADF. Though, when installing from scratch on a completely empty harddrive this is a bit of a hassle to do. At least the Install disk needs to be a physical floppy. Of course it's possible to set it all up by preparing the harddrive in advance with all files on it before starting to install. Did manage to find enough disks to get it all done though.

Don't know if the CD-rom is accessible from the Install disk. Didn't think of that. Could have unpacked the disks and burn a CD and just assign the dirs if that is possible.

It's always easier to think clearly after it's all done. :)
