How hard to install HD on a2000 ?
« on: March 10, 2018, 02:54:24 AM »
How hard is it to install a GVP HC+8 scsi controller + 4 gb HD and 8 mb ram
on my amiga 2000 ?
I found this item on ebay, and would love to get it later.
I can really use the extra memory + HD space.
Tough for a non-hardware person to install ?
Please tell me if I can easily install this.

Piece of Cake. I have that exact card laying around here with 8MB installed on it.

Pulled it when I got my 030 Combo accelerator.

How hard is it in what way? Physically? Just remove a few screws, slide open the case, remove a backing plate, and press it into a slot. If you really want to get fancy, hook up the wire for the LED light at the front of case. Easy. Even if you've never installed a card in any computer before, there's 10,000 videos on YouTube that show you how to do it.

Now setting up the software, partitioning, configuring with HDToolBox, etc., that's a whole other can of worms.

It's certainly decked out (if that's the for-sale config).  Check the Rom versions on the HC+8 if you can.  Unlikely to be a Guru Rom but if the card is a Rev II, that's a good thing.
It should be plug and play if the HD has been set up correctly.  Might have to reinstall OS depending on your Kickstart Rom Version. Remembering it uses the proprietary gvpscsi.device.
I had one of these on my original 2000 when they were new.  Worked perfectly and gave me 2MB/s on a stock 68000 2000.
Getting flashed Guru roms gives you more thruput. :)

What have you got in the 2000 now? You could end up with conflicts over Zorro bus memory.

Does  it come ready installed and formatted cus it may have been set up with the GVP software. Not an issue but useful if you can get the GVP software that came with it.

Fitting is easy just open the 2000 and take off a blank end plate and slot the unit it. There is an LED red black wire for the hard drive light. Should auto detect if its on the system, just do the old two mouse button down. Most likely boot into what ever OS is on the drive if used before. Dunno what ROM you have on the 2000, you may want to update if you have a later ROM than the OS on the drive.

These drives are getting old sadly so don't expect too much from it. Trick though is to fire the 2000 up regularly to keep the drive active, that's what I do. Always interesting to see what is on the drive... Have a look at this.

I have several of these and they all work a treat. Also nice with the SCSI which means you can add more kit like say a ZIP drive. Interestingly I was only thinking that one of my 2000s that I use as a small table for a 4000 ( don't ask ) must have a HD and I just plugged in the tea kettle and switched on and sure enough I could hear the drive booting up. The SCSI on the plate was the give away as to what it was. Great bit of kit and if you can afford it I certainly would get one..... otherwise you would need one of these which sadly let me down yesterday.... Never mind.

The GVP "FaaastPrep" software is useless on hard drives larger than a couple hundred megabytes.  Use HDToolBox or HDInstTools for "modern" drives.

Hi:

I believe the hd is already formatted, but I do have original workbench disks.
If the hd contains OS software I do not have, i will simply buy whatever software
I need and make sure keep all legit.
All the software I need to use (dpaint, moviesetter, etc.) I have all original disks to
install. If the hd has something else I do not have, I do not need as I have my
important software on disks. All I need is for the HD to be formatted and I can
provide the workbench disks. Anything else I do not need.
I want to wait until Christmas to get the hd/ram because I am not sure I really need it yet.
I want to spend this year learning and using moviesetter, and then at the end of the
year if I need it, then buy the combo hd/ram.
My plan is to take moviesetter to the max and make small animations until the end
of the year. If I then am satisfied, I would expand the ram to make longer animations
and use the hd to store.
The plan is in the future to make a full length animated movie, using moviesetter.
If in one year is feasible for me to make it, then I can expand my amiga.
Is possible I might need a lot more of ram, much more than 8 mb.
The plan is to make a full animated movie with moviesetter.
I want to spend one year using it, to see if is possible to make good quality
animation and to learn moviesetter.
If I become talented enough, then I can expand my amiga as needed.
I only need 30 minutes of animation.
Actually I believe the 8 mb will not cut it, I will probably need more ram.
I want to spend one year to learn moviesetter, then expand my amiga
to make 30 minutes of animation.
Any tips will be welcome.
