« on: November 03, 2017, 01:55:56 AM »
Hi All, Can someone please let me know what cables and software I need to use to connect my CD32 to My A1200 to
use it to transfer files off of CDROM?
Thanks in advance

There are much easier ways to add a CD drive to an A1200, that's for sure.

I had Network CD and a Sernet cable to do the same back in the day.  It was very slow and prone to crashing the A1200 during transfers.

Like others said, you should find a solution for connecting a standard drive over IDE.

The easiest way to transfer files would be a PCMCIA CF card reader with compatible CF card. Storage is plenty and you can easily exceed the storage capacity of a CD.

If you really need to add CD drive, connect it directly to the A1200 so you avoid slow serial or parallel transfers. I would use this adapter, cut off the power connector, and install it on the IDE connector on the motherboard. Place a stock 40 pins IDE cable on it, and you can connect your CD drive to the chain. All you need to do now is hooking up some power.

Well, if you *really* want to - remember that plain CD32 has only serial port as option, and even that one requires a specially made adapter. So with some hassle you can set up null-modem over serial cable between the systems. Then software. You would need to boot up the CD32 from a CD that you have prepared already with OS and software to do file transfer over serial port, there is quite a bit to pick from there. Then you should prepare a small RAD disk and copy over the needed OS files and transfer software there. Now it should be possible to reboot the CD32 so it boots from RAD and you can then transfer files from whatever CD to the other Amiga over the serial link. I would not expect any higher baud rate than 38400, so a transfer speed of around 4KB/sec.

Try this:

In truth I have never really considered the CD32 as a suitable tool for the process as the Squirrel and SCSI or even PCMCIA ethernet and Samba provide better options. Saying that I have used the following, though how you would get the kit now I have no idea. Ebay I guess.

Also check out the Q Drive which is cool on this post.

PS.. for the Samba shuffle to use a CD on a normal run of the mill PC this could also work for you.

I disagree! It seems to me the problem and weak element in the chain is the A1200 itself. Get yourself a SX32 Pro50 transfer the 2.5" hard disk / IDE CF card into the CD32 and there you have a super portable mini-AmigaCD system with fast transfer speeds! Good luck finding a SX32 though ;-)
