Setting up a Seagate ST31055N in a GVP A530
« on: April 15, 2017, 10:04:57 AM »
I'm trying to setup a Seagate ST31055N in a GVP A530 but am unable to get Fastprep to see the drive. The A530 is plugged in to an A500(+?) with Kickstart v37.175 (2.04) and the drive that came with it works without issue (a Quantum Prodrive ELS 170S).

I've tested both drives in WinXP using an Adaptec AHA-2940W without issue or any change in configuration, i.e. no change in termination, both SCSI ID 0.

With the Quantum, I can boot from the GVP.Install floppy disk and Fastprep can see the drive. With the Seagate installed, the system won't load WB from any disk unless I disable Autoboot on the A530 (jumper J9 open).

Is the Seagate just not compatible or am I missing something?

I have used the same drive on a GVP HD8+ without issues. If the new drive hasn't been prepped, I believe the machine will take a long time to start booting from floppy. Try leaving it on for 5 minutes longer to see it makes a difference.

Step 1: Stop using FaaastPrep.

Step 2: Use the latest version of HDtoolbox.

FaaastPrep is horribly outdated software, I doubt it can see much bigger than 300-400MB drives. You might be able to get it to work but you're just making it a lot harder on yourself by not using proper tools.

Also, I'd make sure you're on the latest ROM for the GVP and that your jumpers are correct on the replacement drive, while you're at it. :)

Edit: sorry, haven't had enough coffee yet today. You're saying with the replacement drive installed and the autoboot jumper on, the system will not boot at all? Even from floppy?

Actually I quite like the later versions of FaaastPrep, I use FaaastPrep v2.0 for most of my pre AOS 3.5 and older installs.  I never found hdtoolbox all that user friendly.
Further, I used it with the commodore brand scsi controllers as well as the scsi chip is the same that is use in gvp.

It can do luns change all the things you want like maxtransfer, priority  and allows you to use other load versions of fast file system.  I have not attempted to use pfs of sfs with it however.

It definitely beats any of those IVS or Dataflyer SCSI configuration programs.

Motormouth,

I agree with Mike, put Fast prep in it's proper place, the bin. Makes your work harder. HDtoolbox is much better. Learn it, it's your friend.

Actually it is my mistake about Faaaast Prep, it is the GVP v2 Expertprep I use, version 2 comes with two version Faaastprep and expertprep.  Expertprep, is the one I like the best.

I understand both of your points,  hdtoolbox is complete and works.  I just never found it that user friendly.

Noted. Ta. Will probably try prepping it in WinUAE.

Correct, not even from floppy. Also, I've now realised that all the drive jumpers are missing so I can't enable termination. Weird that it works connected to the PC but not the A530, though.

A530 is probably more picky.

Get the correct jumpers installed on the drive (especially for termination) and try again.  Good luck!
