Gary adapter on A500
« on: September 18, 2016, 12:43:15 AM »
I have a memory expansion that uses a Gary socket adapter on the A500.  I can't remember the brand name, but, it gives the A500 2 total megs of memory.  I was thinking of buying one of those Kickstart switchers they are selling at Amigakit, but, noticed that it too has a Gary socket adapter, as well as the board that plugs into the ROM socket.

Can boards be piggy-backed on top of each other, so that I can continue to use my 2 meg trap door expansion as well as the Kickstart switcher?

Thanks,

Kirk

I had a solution like that and it worked fine.

I integrated both Gary adapters into one so I didn't have the double socket on top of each other.  Another solution would be to use those clips for the wires to the legs of the IC.

Not sure this is the right size or not.  If you do use that solution, make sure you connect the correct leg/pin on Gary!

+1. Most "Gary adapters" only connect to a couple of actual pins on the chip. Should be easy enough to visually identify which ones and use the clips. :)

My megachip 2 came with clips, it was unreliable as hell. I ended up getting some pin headers and made an adapter.

Two gary adapters can work, or not. You won't find out until you try.

My personal opinion now is to try to keep things as original as possible.

So an a500+ and an external accelerator/hard drive. The only mod I'd make would be to add a switch to move some chip memory to c00000 and possibly a kickstart switcher.
