Questions about usage external SCSI card reader
« on: May 14, 2016, 05:45:15 PM »
A few weeks ago, I bought a Buffalo external SCSI two slots card reader in a recent trip to Japan.

Now that I am back at home I am testing it and it seems to work fine. I have it connected to the rear SCSI connector of my external SCSI side car with a CD-RW unit. The Buffalo unit has an internal built-in termination, so the SCSI chains ends there.

The question or doubt that I have is about the fact that the reader is detected by the OS, but it doesn't recognizes automatically once a card is inserted, it has to be mounted via System:Tools/Mounter. Then just mounting any of the partitions created in the CF card would mount all partitions.

I formatted and partitioned a 4GB CF card using HDToolBox and cloned my internal microSD (in a SCSI2SD) adapter, and it worked just fine. But even that card with Workbench as a mountable partition needs to be mounted before use.

Is there a way to have the cards to be mounted automatically once inserted in the unit?

Should I prepare all the cards as HDD's to be able to use them with the card reader? What about CF cards that I just want to use as storage?

As a side note: The unit has 2 slots; 1 is a PCMCIA adapter in which I am using an adapter that reads SD and microSD cards, the second slot is a CF card one.

I think this is less an issue with the device and more an "issue" with your SCSI controller. A lot of removable devices need to be nudged with Mounter whenever there's a disk change. I had this issue years ago with  a GVP A530 and a SyQuest drive. There's nothing wrong, per se, but the driver for the SCSI controller (or the SCSI controller itself) just doesn't know how to deal with removable storage.

Do you have this device attached to the A3000 in your signature? If so,  a rev 08 SCSI chip might help.

Edit: Another option would be to create a mountlist for, say, a 4GB card on the device instead of prepping said card with an RDB in HDToolbox. That would essentially make the device a "drive" like PC0:, DF1:, CD0:, etc., which the controller might handle more gracefully. No multiple partitions this way, tho.

Could you please elaborate on how to do what you describe in the edit?

And please point me to where I can find the Rev 08 SCSI chip, if that's a software patch? And not, this SCSI device is not in my A3000 signature, I just bought it and add it.

First of all, what machine and SCSI controller is this card reader attached to? That will determine what your options are.

It's been ages since I've done a mountlist for a non-RDB device, but let me see if I can remember the process. I think you can use GiggleDisk (Aminet) to read the device geometry and it will generate a mountlist for you. With some simple editing (i.e., remove a # symbol) you can turn it into a DOSDriver - have a look at some of your existing ones for examples of the syntax.
