What *is* CPS rate though?

So, this is a unit of measure I see in a lot of Amiga OS3 programs for file transfer speeds. I've never seen it anywhere else though. What is it exactly? Does it correlate to, say, KiB/Second?

Characters per second. Essentially bytes per second.

Aha! Okay that makes a lot of sense. Assuming 8 bit characters that's easy enough.
