Elbox Spider USB and Flash Drive Lockups
« on: January 24, 2016, 01:09:58 AM »
This is driving me crazy looking for a solution or a cause. I have contacted elbox and they keep asking me for the Poseidon error log that gets saved to RAM, but obviously if my system freezes I cant get a log that in RAM!

So here is what is happening. I have this issue on a clean partition with only OS3.9 and the Mediator drivers installed and on my main all fancy partition. This tells me its an issue with setting or the mediator driver or poseidon, since clean or full of mods in the system has same result.

If I boot up with a flash drive in a USB port the system will hang at the Workbench screen just prior to any icons or a backdrop loading. All you see is the menubar with workbench in the upper left and a solid gray screen.

If I use any USB flash drive, be it a compact flash card in a card reader or a thumb drive it will freeze my system up during file transfers from the drive to a drawer on my hard disk. Again it doesnt matter if its the clean test partition or my main all updated. I have tried moving the files to RAM: first and it doesnt matter. It isnt huge files, its several files in a batch using drag and drop or selecting them through Dopus.

SpiderBuf is set to the default 5 in EnvArc:
All 3 units the Spider USB card should have in Poseidon show up fine. Unit 0, 1 and 2.
If I have my mouse and keyboard plugged in during a reboot I have no problems. They init fine and work as they should, no lock ups.  This seems to be only a problem with flash devices. I dont have a portable magnetic drive to test that formated in fat.

Anyone have an idea of where I can look for settings being wrong, something?

Run PCIInfo and look at what IRQs your Spider is using.  When you run PCIInfo this will be Interruptpin.  If it is 0, 1, 2, and your video card is also one of those, move either the Spider Card or the video card so they aren't sharing the same interrupt.

Looks like My Radeon is using 2 (PCI Device 3)

The Spider is using 1, 4, 3 (PCI Device 4, 5 & 6)

Fastethernet is using 4 (PCI Device 7)

Forte Media FM801 is using 0 for the Gameport on it and 1 for the Audio (PCI Device 1 & 2)

So the video card and Spider are not using the same, is the other devices using them a problem? I've moved these all over and it never helped as well.

No one has had a flash drive file transfer using a Spider 2 or any other USB card on an Amiga cause a lock up during file transfers? I cant be alone here.

EDIT:
Well I decided to order an X-surf 100 card with a Rapid Road USB 2 module. We will see if that helps at all. It wasnt a bad deal since I was able to sell a couple non Amiga related items to cover the "experiment" cost of these.

I've had the lockup as soon as Poseidon loads just as workbench is coming up.  I ended up moving the Spider just next to the Mediator bridge using IRQs 0,1,2.  Then my Radeon was on IRQ 3.
The order of cards that works for me was.
Network
Radeon
Sound Card
Spider
Mediator Bridge
I think testing with the flash drive in as workbench is loaded is the best way for you test as you know immediately if there is a problem.
Do you have the jumper removed from swap config?

This is an A4000T version of the mediator. I need to have that jumper closed for the address space to allow my BigRamPlus card to work properly I believe. I havent opened it again since getting the BigRam working though. Elbox did tell me to keep it closed with my configuration though. The order of my cards is slightly diffrent than yours. I have my top PCI slot empty. Then below that one is
 FastEthernet,
 Spider,
 Radeon,
 Sound,
 Mediator Bridge.

If I boot with the flash drive in I do get a lockup right now as well. It locks up just before the icons and my backdrop screens load. If I pull it out and reset all is fine until I do a large batch of files. Usuly it is fine 80% of the time if I just copy things over one b one from the drive though. Its very hard to nail down.

I found best possible solution: remove USB drive during system boot ;)

As an update to all this mess I still get lockups if I transfer large batches of files over USB. Even on the RapidRoad module on the Xsurf-100 (As a bonus the xsurf using Roadshow is much faster than the PCI fastEthernet in mediator)

Not much more I can try to get this solved. If anyone knows a trick or something more to look at, I am open to try.

Ok so you're getting lockups with the Xsurf+Rapidroad as well, I would try troubleshooting what is common between these two controllers.  I'm guessing you're running Poseidon 4.4 on both so that's probably out as you have tried reinstalling it already?

The next thing I wonder is if you are using both a CF reader and USB stick the device doesn't matter but are both using FAT or NTFS?  Have you tried with an FFS, PFS or SFS formatted volume?

you can save log to resetfest rad:
or you can find a way to redirect the poseidon output to serial and catch it on a remote terminal. but i dont tell you how to do that now.

Both the Spider II and the RapidRoad lock up. I am using a thumb drive. I have several, all formatted as FAT. About the only thing I havent tried is looking to see if the FAT device on the amiga side is the issue. If anyone has a link to the latest fat device driver for OS3.X that would be great.

I am also using the last release of poseidon. 4.4 I believe, its the one that comes with the rapid road.

Latest release is 4.5, which contains some specific RapidRoad stuff, AFAIR.
