DKB 1202 memory board software
« on: February 05, 2015, 06:28:48 AM »
I just installed a DKB 1202 memory expansion in my 1200
I put in 8 megs of memory that causes a conflict with my PCMCIA port.
I downloaded the software that which makes it run with max memory
but I don't know how to install it.

It called MagicMem.   Does anyone know how to install it.

Probably stick it as early in your startup-sequence as possible, so the memory is added as quickly as possible?

You saw this?

Quote
The "MagicMem" program operates automatically, and does not require any input from the user. If there is a 1-meg SIMM installed in te DKB 1202 card (and the jumper settings correctly reflect this configuration), the program will add this memory to the computer. If there are two 4-meg SIMMs installed (and the jumpers are set for 4 megabytes), the program will check the existence of a PCMCIA card. If none are present, the entire 4megabytes of memory will be added in its normal address space. If such a card is present, however, 1.5 megabytes out of the second 4 megabytes will be added at the $C00000 address space for a total of 5.5 megabytes, the maximum amount of expansion RAM that can be added when a PCMCIA card is in use.

For advanced users, there are two ToolType options which may be set by selecting the "MagicMem" program icon, and selecting the "Information" menu item from the "Icons" menu of the Workbench screen. The NO4MEG ToolType will always add the second bank of memory at the $C00000 address space, so that you can never have more than 5.5 megabytes of expansion RAM. The NOC00000 ToolType will never add the second bank of memory at the $C00000 address. If you use both ToolTypes, the second bank of memory will never be added.

I don't know how to do that.  I can usually fix computers but
I never had much luck with programming them.  What would it look like;
I dropped it in WBstartup drawer but I don't think that was enough.
I was uncompressing game packs to the hard drive from the CF and it would eventually guru.
Copied the zips to the HD first and then uncompressed them and No gurus.

I just need the command to add it to the startup

Well, since it talks about tooltypes, you should be able to run it either through the shell or in WBStartup.  Since it's adding memory to your system the general recommendation would be to run it as early as possible.

Copy the command to your C: directory

Open a shell command prompt (usually in the System directory) and type:

ed s:Startup-Sequence

Add the name of the command at the very top

Press Esc+x to save and exit

Don't change anything other than adding that one command.  If it doesn't work there, try putting it in a little lower.  You should probably google and do some research on editing Amiga startup-sequences.  ;)

Are your guru's because you run out of memory?  Or because MaxTransfer is set wrong on the CF?  (file copying errors)  Something else for you to learn about, probably.  ;)

I don't run out of memory.  I got the board maxed out (2 - 4meg simms) Running SFS with the max transfer 1fe00 .
I was reading some forums about the 3.0 roms in the 1200 would work with 8 megs with No PCMCIA conflicts.
I think I can safely say that it will not work with CF cards in the PCMCIA slot.

Try it with an ACA accelerator, instead.  I think they map their memory outside the address space used by the PCMCIA.  Also 3.1 might help.  Good luck!

I don't want an ACA at this time.  They are too expensive.  This 020 is fast enough.
I must have done something wrong in my startup -sequence.
I put in C:MagicMem and it disabled my PCMCIA completely.  I took it back out and all is well.
