Replace Amiga 3000 backup battery
« on: September 08, 2014, 10:37:40 PM »
Hi folks

Been working my way through the site.... have all the bits I need to replace the barrel battery in the amiga 3000, but I can't find any reference to the diode replacement.

For the Amiga 2000's the consensus is to replace R803 (that's a seperate project), but is there an equivalent on motherboard for Amiga 3000, and if so where?

Before I go to the effort of disassembling the fragile machinery, want to gather my facts (and piccies)

This is the BEST coin/diode for the Amiga.  It mounts above the motherboard, so you can see the original mount for the battery.  This is handy if you wish to sell the system or to show others the condition of the mb.  Some coin batteries kits cover the motherboard, which IMHO is a bad idea.

I have tried many options with the 3000 for battery replacement, trust me on this one...

Everything comes in the kit and works perfect.

Here are the pics to install this kit:

Welcome!

We produce a small coin cell circuit board to replace the old A3000 battery:

We also have the NIMH battery here:

Thanks folks

I'm just wondering, the location of the batteries requires disassembly of the machine even to replace the coin.

Would it not be more prudent to remove the battery, solder a couple of wires to the battery solder points with a clip in the middle and attach them to a 3.6v NiMH telephone batteries and locate the battery elsewhere in the case. The amigas can then continue trickle charging (no messing with diodes) and it's easy enough to replace a phone battery if it ever fails (I've never seen one of these type of cells leak)

antoniosk,

I had to do this many years ago on my A2000. I took it apart, removed the battery, and used an old shielded piece of wire, audio plug on the other end and mounted to a small board behind the led's on the front. Now I just unplug the board and put in a new Varta battery.

Main board stays clean and it's very changeable.

Chris

P.S. cable was from CDRom drive audio, 4 pin inline.

That's the beauty of Amiga. Do it the way you want!
I like the amigakit coin battery kits. (the coin battery is replaceable)

@SACC-guy,

You can replace any battery on any big box Amiga easy if it's not on the main board. That's the whole idea I went with. I can put anything I want on that board.

IMHO the battery replacements that AmigaKit sells are great, but for the A3000 I'd look at some kind of remote setup, with wires.  That way you won't run into any trouble down the road if you want to (for example) install an Indivision ECS, or as the other poster said, show someone the condition of the motherboard.  Good luck! :)
