Sega Genesis/Mega Drive Controller questions
« on: August 12, 2014, 05:01:43 AM »
Hello again. I have a Sega Genesis (US) controller and wonder if it will work on my Amiga. I did some Google searching and heard something about there being issues with the US Genesis controller possibly messing up Amiga's. Is this true? If so, is there a solution to prevent this from happening?

Thanks

I've never had a problem with unmodified 3 button Sega brand controllers used with various Amigas. The B button is the normal Amiga fire button, C is the alternate used by some Amiga games and the other buttons do nothing. The ADoom.readme from ADoom on Aminet recommends to swap lines 5 and 7 and put a 470 ohm resistor between them (pins 5 and 7) for both 3 and 6 button Genesis controllers. This makes the A button usable with ADoom and maybe Hired Guns. There are some off brand Sega Genesis pads that are electrically different inside so it's possible they won't work the same with and without the mod.

I don't know about this 470 ohm resistor, and what it is supposed to do. I just made an adapter with pins 5 and 7 swapped. It gives me two buttons. Tested with Banshee. You get a fire button and a special power button.

I have plugged sega controllers directly into the amiga, but I don't like it!

With the select button apparently being connected to the +5volt on the amiga, I don't see how it works, and I can see things going wrong..

I use a 6 button mega drive pad with my 1200 and I have had no problems at all.
