Hard drive problem
« on: July 02, 2014, 09:13:15 PM »
I have had some problem with hard drive installation with two different amigas. I started to wonder if I do something wrong, both have same problem NOT A DOS DISK after boot.

Plese note that I do not have these problems with my A1200 Computers, so generally I do know how to install hard drive to Amiga. I have problems with pre AGA amigas.

Latest problem is with Kipper2k's IDE + RAM contoller, 4gb cf card and 3.1 roms

I deleted partitions with DISKPART command in Windows 7, installed it with UAE and it works just fine. With real amiga, shows as a bootable device on early startup menu, it starts to boot, but after few seconds it says not a dos disk.

How many partitions did you create and how big are they?

Which partition is not a dos disk?

Does it help if you make the last partition a bit smaller and leave a small piece at the end of the CF card empty?

DH0/System is about 300mb, dh1/Work is 1,7gb and dh2/games is 2gb

FFS is original so no partitions over 2gb

All of them are "not a dos disk", if I boot from OS3.1 floppy.

I have also similar problem with A2000/supra wordsync scsi and 250mb hd. Luckily I should get "new" scsi hd this week to play with.

Please describe the complete configuration of the Amiga. Currently I only know that it's not an A1200.

Also describe the complete configuration you used in WinUAE. What are the differences between the real and the emulated Amiga?

Can you make the partitions DOS if you format them on the real Amiga? (Quick format!)
If yes, do these partitions work in WinUAE?

Thanks Thomas

I have A500 rev 6 motherboard, it has a 1mb chip and 3.1 rom. Should be best possible to to use with kippr2k's 8mb + ide board. It doesn't have ide connector, just cf slot.

UAE config is prety much default, original chipset, 1mb chip, some mbs fast and 3.1 rom. I didn't even save config, because I don't use WinUEA for anything.

A2000 is also rev6, it has a supra wordsync scsi and 2.04 roms, it has worked some years ago, but has been locker several years after hd got broken. With this I just booted from 3.1 hd install disk

Let's concentrate on one problem at a time. So please keep the A2000 away for now and reply my questions about the A500. Can you make the partitions DOS if you format them on the real Amiga? If yes, do these partitions work in WinUAE?

This may be a silly question, but when you boot from the floppy and see the NDOS partitions, what happens when you format them?  I only ask because all new partitions say NDOS until formatted.

I haven't tried that. I don't have a working floppy drive in that Amiga. My only working floppy drive is in A2000 Computer.

My towerized A1200 floppy died some ten years ago, desktop A1200 read but not write. Floppies are unuseable, they has lots of read/write erros and formating one would require at least three to get one working.

Sorry that happens with A2000, A500 just gives not a dos disk when booting from hard drive.

Ok, then please go back to WinUAE.

On the Quickstart page select an A500 with 1 MB Chip RAM and move the compatibility slider to the rightmost position. If "start in quickstart mode" is disabled click on "Set Configuration".

Change to the Adv. Chipset page. Untick "compatible settings" and add A600/A1200 IDE. Do not change anything else.

On the ROM page select "KS ROM 3.1 (A500/A600/A2000)".

On the RAM page move Fast to 8 MB.

On the harddrives page click on Add Harddrive and select your CF card. Change HD Controller to IDE0 and tick Read/Write. Then click on Ok.

If you start this configuration, does it boot correctly or does it give you the same "not a dos disk" message?

Tested, works :( seems to be not so nice problem.

So I ques problem is with kipper2k's board or CF card. I originally get it for my CDTV, but it doesn't fit well to inside of it. To get case closed, it needs to sit skewed and therefore I decided to move it to one of my A500 computers. (I have 3 of them)

That quite much removed my interest to it. I'm not a interested to have A500 with 8mb ram and ide. So I'll but it away to wait better day.

Thanks Thomas
