Retina BLT Z3 help...
« on: February 15, 2014, 11:23:03 AM »
In the process of rebuilding a system and took my Retina out of storage.

Here is the order I did things and he results:

1. Reseated all the chips.
2. Installed the card.
3. Installed picasso 96c.
4. Started a test screen for the card.
5. There was a blue distorted screen where the mouse wouldn't move.
6. Heard a pop and a smelt buring so I turned it off.
7. The square ICS chip was the one that popped and was screaming hot.
8. Took off all soldered chips, cleaned with IC cleaner, looked for any damage and couldn't find any.
9. Tried turning on, no signal from card at all now and the square ics chip is screaming hot as soon as I turn on the
computer without activating the card.
10. I tried different zip memory with same results.

Any ideas?

Looks like the DAC chip (ICS5300-2) is burned.
You can buy a replacement part from here http://www.ebay.com/itm/131087553255.

This is a warning to others...

I ordered 2 IC's from the Chinese outfit on ebay and they both had issues.

One would only working in very low resolutions and the other had very noisy video.

I swapped cards with a broken Z3 that had a good ramdac and it works perfectly...

May have some bad components connected. Check for bad caps first, if they are DC Blocking and have gone dry they can make a mess.

Hi Chris,

The video is still a mess and I have replace all socketed chips.  So it looks like you are right! How do I know if they are DC blocking?  Sorry for the newbie question, never worked with caps before.  The retina BLT has about 9 or so blue tall barrel looking ones.

See:  http://amiga.resource.cx/photos/photo2.pl?id=retinaz3&pg=1&res=hi&lang=en

Thanks for the help!

What kind of mess it still produces? The replacement chip from the another Retina BLT Z3 didn't work perfectly then?

No it looked good for a short while with the replacement ramdac.  I swapped all the other chips over and still haven't had luck in cleaning up the video.  Does it sound like caps to you?

The video has waves in it.  If I plug the lcd into the amiga video it looks great...

If you have a DC voltage on one side of a cap, you should not see it on the other side, This meant to let only ac signals to pass, the frequency depends on value. This applies to all signal and audio caps.

I will check to see what kind of caps are on the card and measure as you suggested.

I noticed one of the Ferrite Beads next to the ramdac looked abused.  Can a ferrite bead go bad?
