Connecting Amiga to PC with HD cable
« on: March 27, 2014, 07:21:54 PM »
I want to buy an HD cable in order to connect my Amiga 500 and Amiga 1200 with a PC so that I can capture video and upload it to YouTube (that's because I want to run some retro games and capturing through Amiga will be hard I guess).

My PC has a Samsung monitor with HDMI port. I bought an A500 modulator to connect the Amiga 500 with a Sony Bravia TV or with the monitor but connecting through RF cable....it's just suicide. The signal is too bad!

Is there any way to connect my Amiga computers using HDMI cable? Because if not, the only way left is connecting my A1200 with the RGB cable which won't be good for some games. So I look for an HDMI modulator or something. Please give me Ebay links if you find something specific.

Thank you!

Most people who do this use emulators and something like Camtasia screen recording software.  If you really want to record your Amiga's output might I suggest an Indivision on the Amiga and a video capture card with HD15 input on the PC?  They're a bit pricey, but should give fantastic quality.  Need to run the audio separately.  For your A1200 if you have Indivision Mk2 you can use Kipper2K's Amiga HDMI cable, here:

Amiga 2000: 2MB Chip|136MB Fast|50MHz 68060|3.9|Indivision ECS + GVP Spectrum|Mechware card reader + 8GB CF|AD516|X-Surf 100|RapidRoad|Cocolino|SCSI CD-RW

One can always piggy back on the internal D/A inside the Amiga. After that one has to code it into an HDMI stream. Though DVI has less patent mess.

23-pin RGB SIGNAL to SCART Cable ($25 USD), then SCART to HDMI via converter (eBay $45 to $65USD), them HDMI to TV.  It does a very descent job.

Scart is the proper way to get a decent quality. Don't expect miracles though because amiga chips and games are not designed for LCD screens i.e some transparencies in some games are dithered gfx and don't look proper on lcd. Also there is some interlace flickering at color cycling/blinking (like the tail fire on DGalaga)

But in the end the picture is fine and that depends on your TV's upscaller too.
Caution, do not use any of the old scarts, they will propably blinking and if they are not they may damage your scart circuit from the voltage. You need one SCART* with resistors.

As for capturing use the composite outpout, Youtube has not the best video out there and the framerate is low.

On the Amiga 500 you can use a scart for color output with an old vcr and if this has a second scart you can drive its output to your capture device with a scart to composite cable. The TV Modulator suxxxx.

*This is a preview of the scart I built :

There are SCART to HDMI adaptors but some people have had limited success with those. Mine works fine and cost $50.
The connection is Amiga to SCART to Adaptor to HDMI screen.

But I suggest you might use screen capture software rather than capturing the actual Amiga output.

I use the most common onE available on eBay, paid $49 USD at the time, and the output is pretty descent.  On an AGA system (A4000T), hires NTSC is quite sharp.  In the old days, the A1000 composite was good (not great) on a VCR and using a genlock on the A2000, the composite to VCR was good too..  The A520 sux.

Always just used an emulator on a PC and FRAPS.

Perhaps not the "genuine" feel of things, but I always found it to give the best results.
