Can onybody repair a Voodoo 5 card?
« on: December 28, 2013, 12:58:47 PM »
I recently did a rebuild of my system and took out my Voodoo 5 5500. When I inserted it again (after I had been running a Radeon 9250 for a while to check out the new 2.19 driver - nothing interesting there thou) the picture had become fuzzy.

You can see the error here:

I had some of the same issues before when I was running 4.1 Classic. In 3.9 the picture was clear. Now the issues is both in 3.9 and 4.1.

I have checked the components on the Voodoo and it seems like there is a loose component. This one:

Besides the fuzzy picture the card works fine. Warp3D works fine etc.

You can see the whole card here:

Can anybody repair a Voodoo 5 card?

I will post this in other forums also to see if I get lucky.
Booooiiiing!!!!

I can only see the last image you linked but if it's just a single component that's  loose it shouldn't be too much of a problem to repair it.

Is that 470uf cap not soldered to the board properly? Is a leg loose?

If so, it could be the cause of your problem. A cap that large is normally used to filter noise in the power supply. Loose such a cap, noise returns and odd things happen. Anyone skilled with a soldering iron should be able to reattach it. Do you have a local audio/electronic shop nearby? Someone there could help if all that's needed is soldering in a replacement cap.

470uf was infact the cuprit!

When I press down on it the noise disappears.

I have made an arrangement for getting it soldered on again.

Thank you :-D
