Magnetic: the infamous os4 laptop that was "already running"

It wouldn't surprise me if it was running, in a bare form (the underlying kernel?), at Hyperion, with the boot security code / check removed, purely as a proof of concept.  Running != usable.

Wasn't there a rumour of an X86 build too?   Wasn't sure if this was developers making a proof of concept or something started on amiga.org purely to fan the flamewars... ;)

One of the Amiwest organisers claimed that ssolie is such a genius that he has rewritten the C language to be more Amiga efficient.  Whatever that means. lol

X86 build? I cannot believe that. Steve Solie used a error in a library (that was removed not long ago) as evidence that AmigaOS is based on the original sources. So at least parts of it are even 68k, others are propably asm to be more efficient. If it is not developed from start off to be portable it is difficult to port it to another hardware. One of the MorphOS guys estimated it would take years to port MorphOS to X86 (of course I do not know how long it would take to port a unusable base system) so Hyperion will certainly not be faster.

It was a comment made on this page:

"Steve has an amazing grasp of Amiga programming, so much so that he has re-written the "C" language to make it more Amiga efficient"

It has now been edited.

:)
MorphOS is Amiga done right! :)

LOL

Obviously I underestimated Steve Solie :-)

Seriously

Me neither. Would be interesting to hear a bit more, and perhaps something about the source of that info?

I think it depends on your ambitions with the port; if you can accept abandoning Amiga binary compatibility and start over with a clean slate, then a straight port could be done quite fast AFAIK. But I suppose there is little point in sacrificing that without introducing new stuff (that requires this sacrifice anyway), like 64-bit, SMP, etc. Which means new developments, which takes time.

I suppose...

Regarding the X86 build;  I thought I read it here a couple of years ago.  I believe someone mentioned that the 68k assembly routines had been converted to C (required for PPC) and hence theoretically it could now be cross compiled for any target.   I'm sure someone claimed a developer had made an X86 build which at least booted some sort of kernel.

However, searching both here and via Google I can't find any mention of it.

I remember reading it!  Someone must remember?   Am I losing it?

Of course it was never runnning for real, thats obvious now even to the fanboys. I'm impressed the morphos camp hid their laughing about this back then and still do. It was pretty pathetic.

There will be no SMP in our lifetime on Amiga NG, can we stop talking silly?

Also there is no x86 os4 project.

Project Moana was the way to go.
