Amiga 1010 as a swap-in for A1000 internal floppy?
« on: September 04, 2013, 10:37:23 PM »
I'm correct in the notion that a commodore 1010 drive can be opened opened up and used to replace the (faulty) internal drive of an Amiga 1000, correct?

Thanks.

Yes they are the same drive mechanism.

Sigh...

Ok, got this ext 1010 and tested it out. Writes, reads fine, disks can be passed around to the other Amiga, etc. Clean unit.

I opened it up, removed the mechanism, swapped it into my Amiga 1000 as its internal drive, wired it up, and now when I boot I get a frozen white screen. I tried reversing the floppy cable, no dice. Power only will fit one way, and it does fit.

If I re-wire the old drive (which I am replacing as it has a write protect issue), I get the KickStart disk prompt as per normal.

I see no jumpers on this 1010 drive that I have put in the A1000.

Orig drive was Matsu*?#@**?#@**?#@**?#@*a. New drive says Newtronics.

Any ideas? Thanks...

Absolutely sure there's not a pin on the drive that got broken or bent out of shape? Does it still work if you replace it inside the A1010?

Assuming the ribbon cable/pins are good, what happens if you leave the power cable disconnected?

If I leave the lower cable disconnected -- or the power AND data cable disconnected, Amiga never get last white screen. No KS prompt. No bent pins on drive or mo board side of data cable.

You have luck like I do.... I am not used to seeing Newtronics drives in the 1010. The vast majority ad Matsu*?#@**?#@**?#@**?#@*a units.
Are you 100% sure it works as an external unit? If it does, then there must be a jumper some where on the drive (maybe a solder pad?)
I can not track down any serious info on the Newtronics drive. Wish I could some real help....

Is there a part number on the drive. I have data on all the Panasonic (Matsustita) and Chinon FDD's.

This is the Newtronics drive that came out of the 1010 enclosure:

(Looks like a PC floppy drive... https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=newtronics+d357k&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 )

Hey @blakespot -

Are you coming to the meetup on the 17th?  I somehow seem to have acquired five Amiga drives that I don't need, one of which is a 1010.  If you haven't solved it by then (I was thinking it might be a jumper or solder pad, also) I bet we could find something that works.  If I have time before then I'll pull my 1010 apart and see what kind of mechanism it has inside it.  :)
