Putting a Super Agnus in A2000
« on: August 12, 2013, 01:18:23 PM »
I have a Super Agnus (8375) part number 390544-01 from an A500+. Can I swap this for the 8372 that is currently in my A2000 without any issue?
2 x A500, 1 x A500 Plus, 1 x A300 (Early A600), 1 x A1200, 1 x A1500, 1 x A590, 1 x Commodore 1942, 1 x GVP HD8+ (8MB RAM, 52MB HDD), 1 x CD32, 1 x Stock CDTV, 1 x CDTV (10.5MB RAM, SCSI, Developer Flash card, Joystick adapter)

No.  They are not pin-compatible, and you will most likely damage the chip, the board, or both.  In order to get 2 megabytes of chip memory in an A2000 you need one of the "MegaChip" boards.

These come up on Ebay and Amibay pretty frequently.  Disregard the part in that link above where it says "rules out internal processor cards", that's not accurate.  MegaChip works fine for adding 2MB of chip memory and are pretty much 100% hardware compatible, except maybe with something else that mounts in the Agnus socket.  ;)

You need a 318069-03 for the A2000.

You can also use a -18/-19 with a bit more work, I guess you'd need to treat it like a -16/-17.

You could rework the A2000 for an 390544-01, but a lot of lines moved so you'd end up cutting traces and adding a lot of rework wires (which you'd have to undo if you ever changed the agnus back).

It's pointless to even think about putting a 2mb agnus in unless you add the extra chip ram like it says in here:

I don't know if you need to rebuild the clock generator if you don't have a toaster or gunlock.
