Amigasys/dedicated pc, how the hell?
« on: August 07, 2013, 04:42:44 AM »
I have a 3.4ghz pc that I use as a dedicated amiga emulation computer. It does nothing else. it runs xp, I removed windows shell and I'm using the directories provided with amiga forever replacing windows shell with winuae.  Boots straight to amiga os3.x and I love that...

Has a competition pro usb for games and I enjoy it alot.

I would like to dump that setup and use amigasys, but I'm having problems doing this from the amiga forever setup on my other computers.

How can I copy the hdf or what is the location of the amiga sys setup or how the hell?

Confused.

Amigasys is a much nicer environment, than amiga os3.x directories I am using now, but I have tried and can't figure out how to migrate that amigasys setup from my main pc with amiga forever installed to the other pc that boots amiga os3.x.

I have been successful in the past using amigakit, but I prefer the look and feel of amigasys over both amigakit and amigaos3.x provided with amiga forever.
Amiga forever is great, but it would be so much more useful if they just gave you dirs instead of hdf or whatever the hell they are using! Frustrated.

Please no one beat me up for using a dedicated pc emulation machine, yes real hardware would be better, but unless someone gives me a free
real amiga with aga and rtg and an accelerator... (open to offers!) This works for me now.

Someone help me redo my virtual amiga... PLEASE?

Steven

P.S. I also somehow managed to bork my competition pro usb, so if anyone has one for sale let me know. One of my buttons is hopelessly broken. Grrrr...

I think that you can just change the hdfs on your winuae install, then make the shell replacement and you should'n get any problem. I never used shell replacement and don't know the details about it, but i suppose it simply replaces the commands with winuae.
On another note, why are you using a competition pro for joystick?. My hands hurt even thinking about it, and i would go for a arcade stick or gamepad, but if you like it, then it's your choice.

Is changing the shell doing anything more to the xp installation?. Is the xp system still underneath it(i think so, in order to be able to boot), but as i said, never got the chance to play with that feature. What are the advantages of the shell replacement?.

Yes replacing the shell just makes xp boot to os3.x xp still there underneath however, if you need to fix something. Runs much faster I think than if you run from windows desktop.

Yes I've heard amigakit and amigasys in amiga forever use hdf files...

Thats just it, the directories for work and system are easy to find, where are the hdf or whatever the hard drive files for amigasys and amigakit located?

Is there a way to copy the contents of an hdf to a directory so things would be easier to set up?

It's a far better use than just getting thrown in the dumpster.  People should be applauded for putting to use old tech not flamed.
