Just bought Amiga A1200!

I've just bought an Amiga A1200 through the site http://www.gumtree.com , which seems to be UK only and there have been some con artists on there especially when it comes to renting out flats. I wonder if anyone on here has been conned by them. It came without PSU, mouse, hard drive, or anything else at all, but I used my A500 Plus PSU, mouse, video cable and bootable floppy disks to test it before handing over the cash, so I'm very happy with the deal. People are prevented from exchanging email addresses through the Gumtree internal messaging system, but can exchange phone numbers, although they warn buyers to be wary of anyone trying trying to communicate in any way apart from their internal mail.

I gave the A1200 a good test for several hours last night to check which software was totally incompatible, but I didn't have any AGA software. I plan to get Deluxe Paint IV AGA ASAP.

The first thing I buy will be an IDE to CF card adaptor and CF card. Can someone point out the best deals on this?

Of course, you're all probably wondering how much I paid. The seller wasn't charging as much as he could and said he was glad to see it was going to a good home. You can have two guesses before I tell you the price. It was in £ , of course. :pint:

You may be better off with the A500 PS then the A1200 PS anyway.

I bought my CF card on ebay from china for .99 cents American dollas. Bought a CF card cheap from Tiger Direct and have been happy ever since, I now have two running in my Amiga 4000 with a Buddha ide card. This seemed the only way I could get a CF card and a CD-Rom player to co exist with each other. So now I have a CD-Rom on one leg of the Buddha, A CF card on the other leg, and on the Amiga ide connector another CF card. Now the CF adapter is mounted in a floppy disk adapter in the bottom floppy disk bay on the Amiga, that way I can interchange cards. Works for me. :-)

On my A1200 I haven't been able to get a CD and CD rom to co exist therefore I had to use a 2.5 inch hard drive. Anyhow when I get the bucks I am going to upgrade from my buffered 4 way ide connector to one of the more expensive ones to see If that will work.
Right now my A1200 has the cheapest ide buffered interface that I could find, I wasted all my money buying a Blizzard ppc card an OS 4.1, on a 240 MHz Blizzard ppc card OS 4.1 works but a C64 loads up faster off a cassette tape then OS 4.1. If you are thinking about OS 4.1, please put your money in one of the newer unreal Amiga clone systems. (yes Argo, I said this for you) love ya, anyhow from what I see of OS 4.1 it looks pretty good but on the A1200 I got bored waiting for load up time, and also the AGA graphics are completely horrible with OS 4.1. When I get the money I am planning on buying one of the newer systems, hopefully before I go to the great Amiga heaven in the sky.

A lot of people ask me what type of computer to get, my answer to them is "What do you want to do with it, and how long do you plan on having it". I mean my gosh I still have fun with my VIC 20. My original 8088 PC I still use. One thing I like about the older computers is that they don't hook up to the internet, therefore anything personnel I put on them is safe from prying eyes, my 8088 PC uses Lotus 123 for my bank transactions, and check book balancing, it only gets hooked up to the internet for a few minutes each week by phone modem (nice having an off switch again) these new computers today especially PC's can get turned on by internet intruders, I woke up the other night from fan noise on my pc, someone was definetly scanning my computer for something. Now when I go to sleep, I hit the power supply off switch so the only way they can turn it on is to come into the house and turn it on.

Well good luck with your A1200, hope I was some help. As far as using a CF card with a CD-rom buy one of the more expensive IDE interfaces from Amigakit. I found that the cheap buffered one works but only with IDE hard drives.

I'll buy from a seller in this part of the World, so it arrives in a few days instead of having to wait a few weeks. I  haven't got an A4000, so I don't need to know about that. I hope to get a CD ROM drive in the near future, but I don't know understand what may make it incompatible. I think it will need to be one with a Squirrel interface. I'm not thinking about trying to install AmigaOS 4.1 at the moment. As for a next generation Amiga, I can't afford one. The point about the Internet is good. I heard that nowadays lots of or even most computers are being used as communications devices most of the time, not as computers. This means that when they use the Internet they're just communications devices. This may also be the main use of AmigaOS 4.1. My A1200 can't even connect to the Internet without a special interface, which probably plugs into the PCMCIA port. I first used a modem with my old A500 on BBS systems, such as Fidonet. I don't know if there's anything I could do with my A1200 and a modem nowadays. One important point about the CF cards is that one eBay seller says that their cards are guaranteed to work with the Amiga, but some other CF cards are "too fast" for the Amiga, so they won't work. I was surprised when the A1200 Gumtree seller told me that CF cards have moving parts.

That's right! It was being sold as one of various items from paid storage. The low price was due to the lack of a PSU, so it couldn't be tested unless someone brought a PSU with them. Gumtree is cheaper than eBay, but with less protection for buyers. They recommend you see the item in person before paying.

I haven't done anything much with this A1200 since buying it a week ago. I've only tested which software I had was compatible, then put it to one side before buying an IDE to CF adaptor.

I ordered the adaptor, CF card, and USB CF card reader last night, as I posted on another thread. I think they will all arrive on about Tuesday, so that's when I can start to really enjoy this A1200!
