USB gamepad support?
« on: May 25, 2013, 11:04:38 PM »
So I've been digging around for a few hours now and I can't seem to find an answer to these questions;

1) Can I use an Xbox 360 or PS3 controller on an Amiga through a USB Card?

I see that Poseidon says it supports joysticks, but doesn't really go into any detail.  I can only guess that means anything that supports the standard USB HID protocol.  And even if they are 'supported' can I use them as a CD32 Controller?

2) Has anyone tried to make a little cable that is a 9-pin to Xbox 360 adapter?  The Xbox 360 controller that a friend of mine gave me has a little 6-8 inch cable that has a USB Connection on one end and an odd circular connection on the other end (I don't own an Xbox 360, so I don't know if that's what directly plugs into it or not)

3) Are there enough games (CD32 or otherwise) to make this search worth while?

I have been considering long and hard of just purchasing a Spider card for my Mediator (namely for the ability to use a USB Mouse and flash drives, etc) but if I could get an Xbox 360 or PS3 controller working as a CD32 controller for my Amiga through the USB card, it'd be an extra added bonus.

I may just end up getting AmigaManiac's PSX to DB9 adapter, but then of course I'd need to find a PS1 or PS2 gamepad that I liked, and it'd probably push back the purchase of the Spider for a while.

Hi mate,  I cannot seem to find any software after having a look on the net, try dropping Vesalia or Amigakit a line they may be able to help.

There is another option with a PS1 & PS2 controller but not sure with the PS3

You could drop Nathan a line on his website.

He is very busy and a one man band so it may take a short while for him to contact you, some people have had negative experiences with him, mine have always been positive & I have ordered numerous times from him with no problem.

Thanks for the input;  I had mentioned AmigaManiac (Nathan).  Just wasn't sure if he was still filling orders, or is still on hiatus.  Though reading through this thread here;  http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=61691&goto=newpost it looks like he's back to fulfilling orders, I'll kick him off an email and see how that pans out.

At which point I'll have to track down a PS1/PS2 controller.

I'm not really sure about this but wouldn't USB wiring be the same whether you were using Amiga, Mac or PC?

The reason I say this is because all Flash (memory) drives work on all systems including Android phones / tablets as well.

1) yes and no. PS3 controllers have HID support, microsoft don't.

2) no.

3) All games using the lowlevel.library could work, if the lowlevel.library is well patched.

Why am I not surprised that Microsoft whouldn't use a standard like HID?

I think I'm going to go ahead and order the USB card from Amigakit, along with one of the boing ball optical mice (the middle mouse wheel and the fact that it's optical rather than having balls is just too much to not want one..) and then I'll test out the PS3 controller and see how well it works with the Amiga.
