Amiga SIMMS
« on: January 26, 2004, 08:20:29 PM »
I've just acquired a SIMM tester and have a load of 72pin SIMMS that have been under my bed for almost a year to test through.
What I want to know, is:
Is it just a case of trial and error to see which SIMMS work in  my Amiga accelerators? Or is there no reason why most shouldn't work?

As ever, thanks for your help :-)
I like Amigas

simply like this , EDO simms doesnt work in several cards , some cards dont like the simms because of fysical size.

also there is alot of "try before you buy" things as amiga cards (all) doesnt accept 50/55 NS simms nor 80NS simms ..

60ns is the best you can use in an amiga card!

Edo works only in a few cards (but it will be read as a normal 32bit simm)

so to your question.... read above :P
Whats up with all the hate!

I´ve tested many simms in my girlfriends A1200 with Blizzard 1230IV and several of the mems reports 3.5MB(label 4MB) or 1.5MB(label 2MB) and other mems report more than what it says on the label(I know about 1MB is 1024KB), any thoughts?  :-)

The cyberstorm cards supposedly will work with
<60ns SIMMS.  I currently use 60ns EDO SIMMS.
Many Amiga boards can use Parity SIMMS, but the
extra bits are ignored.  The only brand of boards
that I know of that use special SIMMS are the GVP
boards.  I really don't know the difference, but
regular SIMMS will not work.  I have had some
bad experience with 8MB Simms on my 4000T
motherboard.  The SIMMS with higher capacity
chips can be troublesome from what I hear.

I bought a 64MB SIMM that worked very badly (lots of crashes) in my Blizzard1260 and not at all in my SCSI-IV Kit. It was rated at 60ns, and I didn't see any reason for it not to work, but alas - such is life.

The best way to test Amiga SIMMs is probably in an Amiga. Not very convenient, sadly.

I've got 4 sets of 32MB 70NS EDO simms thast just refuse to work in my CS MK III, but they work just fine in the CSPPC I have. Go figure that one out! From what I have tried fast page simms seem to work best for me, but as other say EDO works for them.
