64HDD Type Program for Amiga
« on: October 24, 2012, 02:25:30 PM »
I have used the 64HDD software quite a bit, and it works really well.  Although it is out of my knowledge range, do some of you smart guys and gals on here think it would be possible for someone with the knowledge, to write software like this for the Amiga?  I know, it is different, but is it doable.  To set up a PC to use as a hard drive or floppy drive, for the Amiga.  With the 64HDD for the 8 bit computers, you simply hook a cable between the Commodore and a parallel port on the PC, and you can assign drive numbers to whatever path you choose.  I know there is a program out there for Amiga that may do this already, but I can't think of the name of it right off hand.  If so, is it any good and worth buying?  I use Amiga Explorer, and it works great, especially since I upgraded the serial port in my A2000 to a MultiFaceCard III, but it is still not the same.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

Edit:  The software I was thinking of was MPDOS.  Not sure how good it is, but it sounds like it might do the job.

So what is it you are asking for? Do you want to use an Amiga as a 1541-emulator for your C64? Or do you want to use a PC as floppy emulator for your Amiga? The latter already exists: http://hxc2001.free.fr/floppy_drive_emulator/index.html#USBFloppyemulator

Doing it without hardware is not possible. The Amiga floppy interface is not a standard serial interface. The 1541 one is.

I want to use the PC as a floppy, and, if possible, a hard drive for the Amiga.  I was just using the 64HDD as an example.  I will check out the link you provided. From looking, it looks like MPDOS does what I want, except for hard drive part, which is probably not possible.   Thanks.

There was a software and hardware solution called Siamese that would do about what you ask. IIRC there was a version 2 that did NOT use a PCI card - I don't know how that version worked.
I believe Siamese was limited to Windows 98 on the pc, but I could be wrong (It's been a long time)
This setup appears on ebay every now and then, but sure isn't what you would call a hot item.
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

Yeah, on the C64, the floppy and hard drive use the same port.
On the Amiga, not.  So you can't really do that with default ports...

There is a device/software that connects from the Amiga floppy port to a PC parallel port for floppy emulation.  No write access if I recall...  And no hard disk...

I think you can do just the hard disk also this way using PC2 Amiga, which uses the Amigas parallel to the PCs parallel port for the connection.

I suppose, if you had 2 parallel ports on your computer (and most have none), you could possibly run both of these solutions?????

That would probably be the most similar...

A bit extreme tho.. ;-)
