SAM460EX Running Old Games
« on: October 15, 2012, 09:56:48 PM »
Hi All,

I was planning on getting one of the SAM460EX systems from Amigakit. My hang-up, however, is will it play games? I was thinking of putting WHLoad on it and running AGA and some older games. Would it run games from OCS, ECS, and AGA chip sets? I see it seems to run old apps that could run on 2.04 and 3.0 but I would like to play Lotus, Eye of the Beholder, and some other games on it. just making sure if it will play them or not.

And how well does it do this? Surely not better than current PCs with WinUAE?

Why not just get a real Amiga and save yourself hundreds of $$$? Or run UAE and save space too.

Most 68k games run great seamlessly with a double click using either glUAE or RunInUAE; however, if your main goal is to run ALL old 68k games then nothing beats original Amiga hardware

If you buy it only to play old games I say get a stock A1200 instead.

Of course not. WinUAE is the best version of UAE available (although I think they might have added JIT emulation to  runinuae).

But the idea of using a PC to run Amiga apps seems to chap all the legacy hardware user's asses.

Frankly, I've got a copy of one of the more complete versions of AmigaForever and it just amazes me.

On the other hand, if its a primary concern (that you want to run legacy games) then AOS 4.1 systems from Acube aren't probably the best solution.
As PPC processors go, the Applied Micro CPUs used by Acube are fairly weak.

The processors used in Macs supported by MorphOS are quite a bit more capable. And the PA6T in the X1000 is also pretty powerful.

But, once again, they're all trumped by PCs.

Since my own focus is mainly on new apps for NG systems this doesn't matter.

I just keep a copy of AmigaForever around to run legacy games.

I have a SAM460ex running OS4.1, update 5. I comes with RunInUAE installed and WHLoad. In my own experience, I have managed to run an equal number of games from WHLoad list as adf files that I have downloaded from the web. For example, I can run California Games and CA Games II from the adf files, but I get error messages with the WHload versions. I'm not a power user of OS4.1, so this may be different for some other users with more experience.
