OS4 classic does not boot with Radeon
« on: September 30, 2012, 08:18:55 PM »
Hi all,

my A4000 with Mediator 4000Di Mk II does not boot OS 4 any more if I insert a Radeon 9250, there is no other card in my Mediator. It hangs at pink screen. Under OS 3 it works fine. I think this card should work under OS 4?

Of course it should work.
Do you have any other PCI video cards around?

I always keep a Voodoo3 2000 on hand because I can use it when flashing PC cards to Mac and in many Amiga related applications - and they're cheap and perform fairly well.

There are some Radeon cards that Elbox sold that are only partially supported (3.x only), hence the PCI.library ver 10 (download from Elbox's beta site). This is a kludge. I don't know if OS 4.1 Update 5 fixes this, but try another Video card. It seems this only pops up with the Radeon and they are well aware of the problem. Keep in mind that OS 4.1 wrote their own drivers for all the supported PCI cards to make the PPC compatible and "Radeon" defines only the chip set, not its implimentation on the card. A "quick and dirty" WinX driver can save money in the PC world, but not in a niche market like the Amiga.

I had to try several Radeons before I got one working with OS4.1 Classic in my A1200T, most 9200 and 9250 I tested did not boot, one even caused my FastATA MkIII to explode a mach chip!

The one that I have here and working is a 'saphire' badged 9250 (128mb)

If you can find one that's the best bet, many 'budget' Radeon's have the mobility chip and I'm told this does not work with OS4.1 Classic.

Steve.
