1084S just went belly up I fear

I have been using my faithful and beloved 1084S for many years, and last night I was playing a game, the picture vanished, the light in the power button went out, and it started making a high pitched whine.  I tried plugging it back in this morning, and same thing.  Any ideas or is it time to send her off in style???  :cry:

the flyback is gone... the same happen to my 1084 too.. but in my case it was worse, i had two die in one day... rip.

Is there a way to fix or replace the flyback transformer, or just dig a hole and bury with full honors???

It could also be the horizontal drive transistor.... you could try taking it to an old school tv repair shop, assuming you can find one.

My Philips CM 8833 died half an hour ago too.

I was in the Workbench and suddenly the screen went black and the power light went out, and there was a tone that gradually declined in frequency and volume (like a staircase descending is the best way to  put it) and it goes to a low tone from a high one and then disappears. This tone is not from the speakers...
If I turn it on again all I get is the same tone, until I turn it off and then the frequency and volume decline the same. I'd say it's no more than 1KHz initially, and it sounds square or triangular.

Is it fixable?

When the flyback goes it often takes out the horizontal output transistor as well. Does anyone still sell flybacks for these? I also have one that went bad.

Bad solder on the flyback can cause these troubles also. It is worth trying to resolder the connections to save it.
Just be careful if you go into it! There are some deadly voltages in it- even when it is off. Best to leave it to someone who deals with these type repairs if you don't have the experience.

Some things go bad in the power supply circuits also sometimes. old capacitors can be issues in these monitors also.

If you can translate the part number into a Phillips or Daewoo number, you might find one from a tv parts retailer. Back in the day, we ordered a couple that way. I think they came from a place called MCM electronics. They're probably getting much scarcer now, with LCD screens taking over.

Good point on the solder connections. Back when I was an Amiga repair guy, I saw so many solder failures, that I made it a habit to retouch those joints whenever I had reason to open up a monitor.
