GVP A2000 030 Combo SCSI Which filesystem?
« on: August 04, 2012, 08:00:10 PM »
Evening all,

I'm having problems with my GVP Combo and a Mechware SCSI Card reader. FastFileSystem works nicely, however trying to format any sized volume with SmartFileSystem reboots the machine, I have also tried Professional File System SCSI Direct version, which always reports my empty 500mb Partition as almost full though there are no files.

Anyone else had similar troubles? I'm thinking I may just have to stick with FFS. The CF Card I'm using is 4gb so it should work, right?

What WB version are you running? It's only 3.9 that allows 4GB partitions, my recommendation is to keep the boot partition under 2 GB.

It's OS 3.1, boot partition is 500mb or so.

500 MB should be fine, the only other problem i can think of is an older version of GVP Firmware. Although I've install a lot of GVP Cards I always preferred Commodore 2091 and Comspec SA1000/2000 SCSI Controllers.
I think SFS requires a specific Filemask setting and the device type should match the gvpscsi device on the standard commodore scsi device.

I may try professional filesystem non direct SCSI tomorrow. Weird how FFS works but nothing else does though :|

I use a mechware reader, and a CF HDD.  I use a 500mb part for the OS, then another 500mb part, and then a 1gb part on my 2gb CF drives.  i also am using SFS, with no problems.  I am using an A2091, though.  I found a step by step tutorial on how to set up SFS on a CF drive, and it works perfectly.  Could it be that you are forgetting some of the parameters you have to set for SFS?  Here is a link, just go here and click on the link to the pdf file and download.

I set mine up in Winuae.  I hope this helps, it really helped me.

The direct-scsi version of PFS is for the A1200's IDE port, don't use it on an A2000.
A1200 030@28Mhz/2MB+32MB/RTC/KS3.1/IDE-CF+4GB/4-Way Clockport Expander/IndivisionAGA/PCMCIA NIC
A1200 020@14Mhz/2MB+8MB/FPU/RTC/KS3.0/IDE-CF+2GB/S-Video
CD32 020@14Mhz/2MB+8MB/RTC/KS3.1/IDE-CF+4GB
A600 030@30Mhz/2MB+64MB/RTC/IDE-CF+4GB/Subway USB/S-Video/PCMCIA NIC/USB Numeric Keypad+Hub+Mouse+Control Pad
A500 000@7Mhz/512kB+512kB/ROM Switcher/KS3.1+1.3/S-Video

Thanks everyone for the advice, I'll have another go at it later on, I presumed setting up a CF Card was the same as setting up a normal hard disk as I've done it before on an A1200 Using SFS, I'll be sure to read that guide later though :-)
