Finally, an Installer

Well, after many times trying to install something, and getting "unable to open c:installer", I finally had some success.  I downloaded Installer43_3 from Aminet, copied the files to c:, and guess what, IT WORKED.  I finally read a little about it and got it to work.  I know this is something simple, but for me, with no Amiga experience until a few months ago, this is a major accomplishment.  I was able to install VirusZ and all the library and decrunching files, and get it to work.  The main reason I wanted to install VirusZ was another poster had commented about getting MagicWB from Zeb's site, and it containing a virus.  I scanned my copy I was using on WinUAE, and it didn't find anything.  So, another small victory in my Amiga education.  I know this isn't a big thing, but to read and figure it out without having to ask, makes me feel great.  I love playing around with the Amiga, that is why I got it, to give me a toy to play around with and learn.  But, I have also come to love my Amigas.

This was the biggest stuff-up done by Commodore. The Workbench 3.1 Install disk contains C:Installer but during the Workbench installation process that's one file which is never copied over! The handy Reboot command is also on the Install disk, but not copied over.

Anyone who installs Workbench should always manually copy those two files from the C/ drawer on the Workbench Install disk to the C/ drawer on their Amiga's boot partition. Reboot isn't used by much, it simply reboots your Amiga when you run it, but it's useful if your keyboard doesn't work well or you want a quick Reboot option to add to a ToolsDaemon menu or something. Installer of course is very essential for installing software!

Installer43 will probably work just fine, but if you ever run into an error in an install script try the original Installer instead.

I just downloaded the "magicwb.zip" file from Zeb's Amiga Downloads and again can confirm the presence of the "Ebola" link virus.
There are 3 adf's in that archive, and the virus is in the adf named "Magic Workbench.adf" and the file that is infected is the text viewer program "MORE".

Have a look in your VirusZ File Check Preferences...

You'll want all the boxes ticked except for the top one (Skip Subdirectories).
The radio buttons on the right hand side should all be in the bottom most position for the best scan possible. ("Use All External Xfd-Slaves" and "Check Sectors In All Files".

I did the same scan of the infected magicwb.zip file in Voodoo-X, and it found nothing. Yet if I extract the Zip, then scan the infected adf it picks it up, or if you double click the adf from within Voodoo-X to go into the adf (deeper into the archive), then click "Check For Viruses" it then picks it up. I suppose then that Voodoo-X doesn't check inside adf files by default, so with adf files you will have to click into them and check them if doing it from within Voodoo-X. I didn't know this until now... so thanks for leading me to it.

As for your Installer43_3, I use it too. The only problem you'll have with installers now is faulty install scripts, and unfortunately there are quite a few out there. Software specifically written for OS3.5/3.9 tend to require more recent Installers, but 43_3 is fine for almost everything you'll come across Workbench2 > 3.1 wise.

Thanks for the update, Paul.  I will definately check my MagicWB again and do as you did.  I have a copy running on my real A2000, so I definately need to check it.  Thanks for the info.
