Not a great picture with S-Video....
« on: November 23, 2011, 08:43:44 PM »
Hi guys,

I have a Samsung SyncMaster 932MW LCD TV and i am using Amigamaniac RGB to S-Video adapter.
The issue is i don't get good picture. It is better than RF but nothing close to Cammys examples that were posted a few weeks ago.

The text is readable in Workbench but still a bit blurry.

The only Screenmode which looks ok is PAL:High Res - 640 x 256 x 256

If i select 640 x 512 then the picture looks a bit sharper, but still not great. When i move the curser over any of the text it leaves a blurry trail behind it so is not really useable.

Is this just my LCD?

Does anyone else have this problem?

I have added some example screenshots below:

Hi,

If you mean does it look fine when playing games then the answer is yes.

The games look as they should and the any text is displayed OK.
I do get some sprites that have lines through them when a character is jumping etc....but i don't know if this is normal using WHDload.

It's the Workbench screen which i have issues with.

I thought i should be able to select higher resolutions than 640 x 256.

Not a problem here. Although my setup is for NTSC w/ s-video. I did have to make some change on the DIP switch settings I remember.

Are your settings correct? Does your LCD TV downgrade to a 4:3 screen mode smartly?

Hi,

I'm not sure what settings you are referring too.

The TV doesn't have to downgrade as such, i can just choose the display mode 4:3 or Widescreen, 16:9, zoom etc...just like you would on any LCD TV i guess.

does anyone else have a similar issue?

Is it just my LCD TV or this is displaying as expected?

I don't want to buy another LCD TV to get the same results.

crawff - doesn't your tv have scart connection?

If it does, then I'd use that for RGB is much better than s-video.

For any non PAL stuff I'd use a VGA (23/15 pin) adapter.

Keep working at it. I'm planning to get a TV soon and just ordered a RGB/VGA adapter.

I hope the troubleshooting goes well...

But I'm curious. If it's fine during game mode, then why does the workbench screen matter? Sorry, I'm new the Amigas...

Well, the Workbench screen is too small, I want to use a higher resolution so the icons are smaller. It's not good for using workbench. my time is split 50/50 between playing games and messing around on WB. When i see Cammys example it all looks great. If you look at my screenshots...it is not.

The scart cable is fine, it works on my main LCD TV in the lounge.

The scart connection on the back of this TV is very loose, it doesn't feel right, hence why i went down the route of using the S-Video.

What i want to know is, is the S-Video screenshot i posted look normal?

Is the quality to be expected? although the pictures which Cammy posted look way better?

There are dip switches and a trimming capacitor for adjusting the settings.  Assuming that your adapter has a case, you need to undo the screws and open the case to get access to the dip switches and the trimming cap.  Info on how to adjust them can be found in the link below.

http://www.amigamaniac.com/V3_RGB_adapter_notes.html

Hope this helps.
