Hauppauge WinTV What model, drivers, software?
« on: November 08, 2011, 08:12:54 AM »
This question is directed at Mediator Users, Amithlon Users, and MorphOS users. I need to find out what Chip Sets are supported (I need a card with S-Video in), what software I will need for each OS, and what Drivers.

Links would of course be helpful. :)

The Hauppauge WinTV range is a right pain in the arse to sort out. Even using one on a windows system takes ages to sort out as several different chipsets are used in the same family. My freeview TV USB stick has slightly newer hardware but windows 7 hates it, Windows VISTA tolerates it and WIN XP loves it. Even with updated drivers it moans at you and often needs to be unplugged and put back in to get the thing to register.

I owned a couple different models back in the day (when the first came out) and never had any issues installing either.

Though I imagine if you've moved onto Windows 7 that you'll certainly be experiencing problems.

I used Hauppage under FreeBSD, flawlessly. It just works.

The best supported chipset is the Bt8x8 chipset. My own OS4 drivers support the Bt848 and Bt878 (probably the Bt849 and Bt879 too), as well as the later Conexant Cx23881/Cx23882 chips, but they're only partially working because of endianness problems with P96 and to an extent, interrupt problems. I don't know if the OSes you mentioned support the Cx chipsets, but they will support the Bt ones.

I do wonder if it'd work better in an X1000 but I can't find out as I have no money. Apparently the RadeonHD in it should work better as it doesn't have the same endianness issues.

Endianess can be solved with software at a CPU penalty. But the drivers should work find when there is a open source version that works. One could even port the driver from BSD by oneself.

Not in P96... there's no way to specify the endianness of the overlay zone.
Of course it works without overlay, but it's slow.

Now that I know what Chip set to go with, I am having troubles finding which card is which on Ebay.

Can someone help to point me in the right direction. Maybe link a few items that have the chipset I need?

Thankx!

Let me know which one you want and I'll look over my unused cards.
Frankly, I've owned TV tuners for years, but I've never really found one I really liked.
And now with the advent of HD television, the field is even more complicated.

I'm pretty sure I have at least two Hauppauge cards.

Thank you for the offer, I'm looking for a Bt848 or  Bt878 Chipset based WinTV with S-Video in.

Or if it is a different chipset and can be confirmed to work with the Mediator and MorphOS, then I'm game! :)
