AmigaOS 4.1 Upg 3 hanging on first boots...?
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:45:44 PM »
I just installed AmigaOS 4.1 Upgrade 3 on my Sam 440EP Flex. It had Upgrade 2 on it before. No issues there. Installed Upgrade 3 -- no errors reported. I then go to reboot and when the new title logo comes up, it just sits there. The logo is pretty dim also. It sits there for 20 mins before I've reset.

Any ideas? I just have one of the approved Radeon cards in there, as well as a USB keyboard and an ethernet cable.

Help...

Reinstall the works from scratch, don't install any extras, just install OS4 then patch it up.  There's issues with an old copy of some MUI things that make that happen.

I had the same issue as you happen, but after installing u1, u2, u3 it worked just fine.

Can someone (from previous threads on this subject(s)) please tell me *again* why Complete/ISO-style releases (with upgrade options) are *so evil* that they must be avoided?

Installing OS4.1.0, OS4.1.1, OS4.1.2, OS4.1.3 in a row in order to get a clean-slate system seems a bit uncomfortable IMNSHO? But maybe it's "Teh Tru Amiga (TM)" in some way I don't understand?

@blakespott

There are many discussions about Update 3 on amigaworld.

If you have a backup of your previous Update 2 installation, I would suggest copying your backup version of Devs/Monitors/Radeon file over to your new Update 3 Devs/Monitors drawer.

This will allow you to use the previous settings for your Radeon card and montior.

As a last resort,  I would suggest doing the following to create a "pure" install:
1)  Quick format of your system partition (only the OS4 partition).
2)  Install AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 from CD
3)  Download and install AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 from Hyperion web site
4)  Download and install AmigaOS 4.1 Update 3 from Hyperion web site

Please note that I have a MicroA1, so I am not sure if there were any "fixes" for the SAM that might be needed in addition to the above updates.

The method Redfox mentions worked just fine for me on my SAM 440.  IIRC, it comes down to a MUI issue going from u2 to u3 if you've installed some of the extra apps.  I had the exact same thing happen when going from u2 to u3, SAM 440ep.

Takemehomegrandma, the guy was asking for assistance, not MorphOS propaganda.  To each his own, you know?  Not sure why some people need to constantly troll other peoples threads with red vs. blue nonsense.

@takemehomegrandama,

Trolling like that is giving MorphOS a bad name. Grow up and move on from the Red-Blue war.

Your "row" isn't mandatory. The only "must"-clean install in this row was and is Update 1. Update 2 and 3 can be installed just over the running system, just like MorphOS. I did this with both my AmigaOS4.1 systems, both Updates (2 and 3) were done after ca. 3 minutes, reboot, that's it, very comfortable. No problems, everything stable and nice.

Most problems occur due to "clutteterd" systems and wrong installs from 3rd party software. Same here with my MorphOS2.7 system when some crazy stuff "re-arranged" MOSSYS: - which is a bad idea as you already know. And - btw - the recent MorphOS SDK does exactly the same prodecure like AmigaOS Update2/3, go figure... :)

I'm not in any way claiming that upgrading to new version of MorphOS is guaranteed to be flawless and problem-free (I know from personal experience that it sometimes isn't), but *if* you need (or *Want!*) to do a clean slate installation on MorphOS, you can *always* do so from the most current image released, no need to install previous ones in a row in a Windows98 kind of way...

I hadn't problems with the Update 3 on my Sams, only that the sound drivers for the Sam460 doesn't run fine, I have the previous sound drivers uploaded in OS4Depot, the Radeon graphics card only we can use in 2D mode, until some day we will have 3D support, perhaps with OS4.2

I wiped and did a clean install of the OS 4.1 Upd 1 install CD, then installed Upd 2 and hard-rebooted then installed Upd 3. It still freezes on the dimly-lit AmigaOS 4.1 logo boing ball.

What is up here? This is a SAM 440ep Flex with the Radeon 9650 (or whatever the recommended card was) and 512MB of RAM -- no other funk cards in there. Just a keyboard and mouse on USB.

Now, I did not install that SAM firmware update that landed a year or two ago that would upgrade the bus / memory speed of the machine at the sacrifice of CPU speed. That was the proposition, as I recall it. Is that update required here?

Very frustrated. Thanks.

Not helping, since he`s got the SAM and can`t really try MOS.

As reported, only real upgrade problem was with 3rd party MUI Classes.

Sorry to hear about your problems.

a) If you haven`t, download and update last UBoot 1.3.1d
from http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=2
b) Try disconnecting USB devices to boot and then connecting them if it (hopefully) boots

Radeon is probably 9250. If its really 9600, card is not well supported by OS

Make sure you didn't install any of the "extras" from u2, which could lead to MUI problems like I had first time around.  uBoot update might be the culprit as well, but iirc I never installed it on mine, but it's worth checking.

Ok. Still no luck. So...

No dice, there, either.

Reinstall the works from scratch, don't install any extras, just install OS4 then patch it up.

No extras installed by any step outside if just choosing the main Install option...

Any other ideas?  Thanks...
