Radeon 9600 AGP
« on: September 09, 2011, 05:43:41 PM »
Just got my hands on a big endian Radeon 9600 to put in my G4 PowerMac.

Does anyone know if/when 3D support for this card is coming to MorphOS?

Out of interest, does OS4 support it?

The MorphOS Dev. Team does not release any dates of when they will support any particular hardware, so no one can tell you exactly when 3D support for your Radeon 9600 card will be released in a new version of MorphOS.

I think it might be included in the next release, v2.8, but don't know when that will be finished and released.  My guess above is based on recent statements on MorphZone.org by one or more of the MorphOS Dev. Team members that the next version of MorphOS will probably contain support for a few models of the G4 PowerBook and earlier statements by the same, or other MorphOS Dev. Team members that a release for any G4 PowerBook will not be finished until 3D support for the PowerBook's ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics card was also finished.  So, my thinking is that if 3D support for the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 card will be finished in the next release version of MorphOS, chances are good that 3D support for the 9600 may also be included in that version.

Since this graphic card is intended for your G4 PowerMac, I will assume that it is a card originally manufactured for a Mac, or it is a PC card that has been re-flashed to work in a Mac computer, so asking if OS4 supports it is a moot point, since OS4 does not run on any Mac hardware.  (I always forget and have too look for references on big endian/little endian, to remember which is which)

Well I was kinda hoping that one of the MorphOS devs that frequent this place might be able to give a hint.

Thanks, that sounds promising.

It's a genuine Mac part.

I know that, but OS4 does run on other machines that contain an AGP slot.  I was curious as to whether there is support for this card in OS4's P96/Warp3D drivers or not.

PPC & 68k == Big Endian, x86==Little Endian (Not counting fancy tricks ala Amithlon etc).

MorphOS Devs are not prone to giving many hints about release dates (not to say it has never happened).

My guesses about 3D support and what will or won't be in the next release of MorphOS are only that, guesses.

I can't answer anything regarding OS4 video card support, but would think that there is a list somewhere on the Hyperion site that shows hardware that is supported, similar to the list of supported hardware on the official MorphOS site.  I have read about people re-flashing PC parts to work in Mac computers, but not the reverse, so unless you have some info on how to do that, using your Mac 9600 in any OS4 AGP equipped computer is a little unlikely.  (maybe the same steps are used to re-flash for use from a PC part into a Mac and you can find the correct file to use to make your Mac 9600 into a PC 9600)

@nicholas

From what I've read I haven't seen anyone use an ATI Radeon 9600. I have read of people using a 9800 though. First of all the card must support AGP 2x speed to work and many cards doesn't. If it does you might get working 2D but 3D is not supported AFAIK. It isn't for the 9800.

If you check wikipedia it lists supported cards for 3D and it goes up to the 9250.
