Workbench disk
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:28:58 AM »
Hi all,

I'm new here and just picked up a a3000 for giggles of my youth. It has a 3.1 ROM, Kickstart 40.68, but workbench is not completly installed and is 1.3 I believe because it isn't capable of reading 3.5" PC disks, just 5.25.

Anyone with a set of workbench 2 or 3 disks in the Hampton Roads Virginia area? I can paypal a few bucks for someone to send to if anyone is stateside willing.

You'll need to mount pc0: before you can read pc floppys. Even then, you will only be able to read 720k floppys.

Quite handy if you dont have a CD drive for some inexplicable reason.

The ebay ad says its a high density drive, so it should be able to read PC formatted (1.44MB) floppies if the ad is true. I have a 3.5" high density disk drive in my A4000 and could read 1.44MB disks fine after mounting PC0:

From the screenshots it says that workbench version is 34.34, which is Workbench 1.3.3

I just been browsing some forums to find info to refresh some of my old workbench memory.

On one forum I noticed they mention a "transfer to PC" tool that came with earlier wb versions, but this was known to work only with external 5.25" diskdrives.

From what I found, CrossDos is not included in WB1.3. Nor does it work with WB before WB2 (maybe even not before wb2.1)
Crossdos from v7 will also support PC HD-disks (1.44MB), but versions before only supports 720k.

An alternative to CrossDos is a program named MessyDos that can be found on aminet. There are two versions, 1.56 and 1.58. The newest version states that it needs WB2, so you could try 1.56 with WB1.3.
Both versions says they support HD-disks.

But if you can get hold of real WB3.1 disks you wouldnt need crossdos or messydos anyway, since wb3.1 have crossdos functionality anyway.

If you find wb3.1 impossible to buy, I guess they are available as adf files so you could write your own disks by transfering the disk images to your A3000 and use an adf-writer program..

It needs at least 2.0, but CrossDOS 7 is the way to go. It is much better than what comes with Workbench, and version 7 will indeed acces 1.44 HD PC disks (once you place PCx in the DOS drivers drawer. Version 7 also allows long file names rather than just truncating the file name. It's a great program.
DOS 2 DOS is an option on 1.3, if you can find a copy. This is nowhere as good as CrossDOS, but it does work.
I may a spare set of 3.1 disks, I'll dig to see...
A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

I was able to transfer my Amiga Forever ADF's using a serial cable and write the disks on the a3000 itself.  The bad news is the SCSI HD has read errors since formating and I cannot get 3.1 installed.

Nice!  I low-level formated and created a new partition a couple megs shorter then max.  The bad sectors must have been there because everything is smooth now and 3.1 is installed.
