My A2K has flatlined... Can WinUAE save the day again?
« on: December 28, 2003, 02:35:55 PM »
After several years of neglect and storage in a ####roach infested cardboard box in a shed by the sea, my Amiga 2000 doesn't seem to be responding anymore.

The first power-up made all the right noises, the black- grey- white boot seemed fine... even the hdd light was ticking... then everything stopped quite abruptly and I think she's dead.

I've had great success with WinUAE before, when backing up & transferring data to an IDE drive... but this is a SCSI drive.  Will WinUAE find it? (not at my main base so I can't test this to find out)

I only want to recover the data to put on my new a600... other than that I think this machine is now "parts only".

Speaking of which, there is a decent flicker-fixer card in this thing which I've seen go for around $200! Would there be any interest in any of these parts?

2 meg ram, motherboard (probably fried), SCSI card and SCSI Tape backup drive... other bits n chips...

anyway- WinUAE- SCSI drive... possible??

thanks!!

why is there a censorship script running on these posts?? we're all grown-ups!

It's really infuriating to be so patronised by a mindless script...  the offense caused by this cendorship far outweighs any offense that a swear word could create!!

Cmon Amiga.org...  please don't turn into a bureaucratic IRC channel.

You could always try removing and reinserting all the chips, cards and connectors in the A2000. This can cure old computers, especially if they have been subject to moisture of any kind (shed by the sea) which can have resulted in oxidation of contact areas. Check if the clock-battery has started to leak as that in time can render the computer non-functional.

Also try removing all expansions and see if the computer starts then. If it does - then add the expansions one by one until problem occurs.

I dont have any answers to your WinUAE questions.

Good luck!

Im no expert, but surely the salty sea air will have damaged the chips beyond repair?  :-?

I do believe that the current WinUAE will recognize a scsi drive using
ASPI?? scsi. It would be worth a try. I'd also suggest taking the
Amiga apart and see if the roaches have nested under the motherboard.
:) Clean it up really good inside and try again...sounds like powering
in on may have made electrical contact with a life form or life form
byproduct. :)
:-o...

You also might want to try to test the power supply to see if it hasn't died. The power supply can be replaced. Clean and test everything first before giving up hope.

If the motherboard has died, then yes, the latest WinUAE and a SCSI card will work with your Amiga formatted SCSI HD (just as long as the RDB is intact). Then you can turn on 68040 w/JIT emulation, install Picasso96, and have a totally faster running "Amiga".

Hi,

I used to own a A2000, a lot of times when you leave them sit for a long time they won't boot up. The cure seems to be to plug them in and turn them on for a while until your battery gets enough charge to handle the rom chip.  Once the rom gets enough juice it should be able to identify your unit and issue out the right commands to start it.  I hope, it worked with mine.

Being as the battery was unceremoniously ripped out of mine, don;t see why that works, but probly does, just not sure why...

I'll try pulling it apart one last time, but after that if anyone wants a dead Amiga2000 with flickerfixer card and scsi tape-drive, you can find it in the dumpster at the back of my apartment building!

(is the flicker-fixer worth anything on ebay?)
