Old A500 games on A1?
« on: December 27, 2003, 01:54:38 AM »
Is it right, what I have heard? That the old amiga games cannot run on A1? If not, would that not make the A1 "amiga uncompatible"? That dosen't seem smart to me. Am I Right? :-?

uhm, there are a couple of obvious reasons why you can't do that but look at it like this, you can't run old 16-bit dos games in the nt versions of windows right, or atleast they won't work very good, in the beginning loads of people were making noise about this but later on more and more stuff got ported to the new 32-bit platform and everyone lived as happy as you can be with windows.

you can't cling on to old stuff forever if you want things to progress. you'll still be able to run old stuff through uae. It's time for the amiga to leave 1985 and enter the new millenium, or something...

Well I see your point, but what to do with your 400 floppy disk's? As far as I know,  will UAE not run games from amiga floppy disk's right?

Just keep an old A500 then for those disks. You can do what I do and just convert them to ADF and run them under UAE. UAE runs the games better then my real A3000 does.

no :/ but if you still got your old trusty classic amiga you can make adf images of them and transfer them to your a1 or peg or pc or whatever you choose to run uae under. there is also the catweasel which from how i understand it can be used to read amiga floppies on alien hardware.

or you could just keep your old amiga for playing the old stuff on  ;-)

I wonder if it will be possible to make an add on card that you would run the old stuff, kinda like a bridge board or something. Maybe something you could run from cli.
Just because I think everybody is out to get me doesn\\\'t mean that they\\\'re not.

Sorry-- No.. It's not possible to make such card anymore... There are no suppllies of those old Special Chips Amiga used, and re-making them ain't going to be commercially vialble option.  Besides you shoudl have entire computer on a add-on board (with all things like CPU, Special chips etc) before it woudl be compatible enough for old games.. So-.. it's both cheaper and better to have real A500 for those old games.

At this point it's better to accept the fact that time has gone by of those old Amigas and start to look for future. It ain't going to be same as ten or twenty years ago (as Amigaone aren't as groundbreaking innovation as A1000 was in 85) but there are chances something interesting will happen.

Don't forget about the PCI catweasel.  With one he can read his original disks (even NDOS ones) and run the games in UAE on an AmigaOne.

TBH... i cant wait to get away from the old platform. As much as amiga rox, its old dude... time to move on. You gotta get the new stuff to keep amiga "on schedule and rockin!", but always keep space on the desk for the classic :-P
