Is my A4000 dying?!
« on: January 02, 2004, 12:04:45 PM »
Hi!

I'm getting worried. Yesterday I heard a loud "click" from the computer and it did a resett. When I woke up this morning it did it again. Then suddenly it shut down allthough the powerbutton was still pressed in. So I pressed the button twice to make it start again. I recently heard that sound again but this time nothing happend.

I've got the A4000D in a Power Tower and wondering if it could be the PSU? Anyone familiar with this problem?

I'm getting worried.

When you write that you heard a "click" from the computer, from which part of the computer was it?  Was it from the HDD??

could be the PSU?
It certainly could be.

A problem like that is usually either a faulty PSU or:

A short

or

Over heating

It could be anything, and we really need more detail from you in order to make a diagnosis

Hi HotRod

try to boot from a bootable floppy disk.

If the system starts, probably tour HD is gone away with the Angels :-)

Ciao

Another (obvious) suggestion is to remove any expansion cards and other unnecessary hardware, then test!

Sounds like you power supply to me if you have a spare psu then it might be worth trying to run your a4000 from it. :-?

Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't think it's any of the two harddrives. The number one reason is that the computer boots up fine and I can read/write from them, no problem. When the click comes wich is pretty loud (makes me jump sometimes) :-) it will reboot most of the times.

I don't think it's a heat-problem cause I've been using my computer this way for 1.5 years, this began recently. The hardware is the same since 1.5 years except for a change from a Voodoo 3 to a Voodoo 4.

I've tried to disconnect the CD-burner to see if it's a case of two many units being connected but it didn't change anything. Besides I think that the Power Tower CPU shall be able to have two harddrives and a CD-burner connected without problems.

If it was a harddrive-problem I should get read/write errors and stuff wich was the case with my IBM harddrive that recently died.

I don't have another PSU to try but I thought that if it's likely to be the problem I could order a new one from Elbox.
