Workbench & Screenmode colors
« on: November 21, 2011, 11:37:41 AM »
I set Screenmode for 256 color workbench but after a reboot it is back to the 16 colors.

When i go back in screenmode it says it is set at 256 and when i click either use or save the colors return to 256.

But why do i have to do this everytime workbench boots?

Wrong SetPatch version or SetPatch not run at all?

Workbench screen opened before SetPatch is run?

Workbench screen opened before IPrefs is run?

Some patches installed?

I remember magictv (software flickerfixer) doing something like that. It only worked on interlaced screens upto 16colours.  I might be wrong though.

When I copied some files off my 3.9 CD they came over right protected, I couldn't save any prefs. Could be that. There's a shell command to make all the files writable, if that is the problem. Thomas probably remembers how to do it.

protect sys:#? +wd all

But he says that screenmode prefs shows depth already at 256 when he opens it, so it was saved previously.

Yes it was. As in when booted up it is 16 color but when i go into prefs it says 256 colors without me setting it. Then all i do is Save and it goes to 256 mode.

Please answer my questions above.

The problem obviously is that when the screen opens it thinks the AGA chipset is not present and thus depth is limited to 16 colors. Later it knows that AGA is present and no limit applies.

The cause most likely is that the screen is opened before necessary drivers have been run. SetPatch, Devs/Monitors and IPrefs are the necessary programs to run before the screen opens.

Two more questions to answer:

Do you have anything in Devs/Monitors?

Do you have some kind of boot picture installed?

Problem solved.. There was a problem in startup-sequence and the screen was not being redrawn. Fixed now.

Thanks for that command, Thomas! That will make any further OS3.9 installs a LOT easier... well, post-install, LOL!
