I have an A2000 '020 with OS 3.1.

What's a good IRC client to use? Thanks.

AmIRC and WookieChat are the best clients for Amiga imo.

Though AmIRC apparently is riddled with backdoors and security holes.

Amirc and wookiechat is quite resourcehungry so i think i would prefer grapevine on a slow 020 machine even if thats a quite bad irc client. but test with amirc first. a 68020 might be enough to run it smooth, on 68000 it's painfully slow and on 030 it's ok

I use the netconnect package.  Brilliantly easy. AmIRC and TCP stack.

Having 1 or 2MB fast ram should do.

There is also BlackIRC available for free from Aminet.  I have never used it but the documentation makes it sound great.

What is the most interesting Amiga IRC channel these days?

There's no backdoor that I can think of. AmIRC has two hidden features though:
  • It's possible to query the serial number via specially crafted CTCP. This can be used to identify people using pirated versions.
  • AmIRC refuses to DCC SEND its' keyfiles. That's reasonable enough measure I'd think.
Neither of these amounts to a backdoor or security hole IMHO.

On a few of my setups, AmIRC seems to have some memory leak bug where it will just start eating all my RAM until it's gone, on a 32MB and a 128MB machine it happens. I wish I knew how to stop it because AmIRC is much faster than WookieChat, although WookieChat is still what I use on my 030 A1200. I use Grapevine on my 2MB 68000 A600 and it works great too.

Never noticed a memory leak in AmIRC... I would use it for between six to 12 hours at a time.  In fact, for a while I was leaving it on for days at a time.  Could it be one of the MUI classes leaking?

The last time I used it regularly was probably a good three years ago.  Saw heavy usage bewteen 1997-ish and 2004, with Kuang11 installed.  I would assume several of the MUI custom classes used by AmIRC have seen updates if not out-right replacements since then.

It still runs very well for me when I fire it up, but it seems that the IRC social channels have all but been abandoned.
