A1200 Floppy and Harddrive Question
« on: March 18, 2007, 12:56:06 PM »
I have an external floppy drive for my A1200 which i'm trying to get to boot and old public domain demo called 'Jesus On E's' i have which needs an external drive to work. The demo boots from the first disk ok, but then it tries to access the second disk in DF1:, but it doesn't actually load anything from this disk though the drive light comes on. It then tries to find the second disk in DF0: then DF1: again and again, but not actually finding it.

If i boot my A1200 into workbench from my harddrive and put a disk in DF1: it shows up and you can open the disk from workbench ok.

The problem i think is in the boot options (press both mouse buttons while booting) where i get the following show up next to DF1:

Enabled - DF1 Priority-10 ADOS trackdisk-1

Is it the 'Priority-10' that's causing the problem as all the other devices in the boot options have a priority with a number without the '-' symbol next to them. If this is true how do i get DF1: to show up like the other devices???

The other problem i've encountered is i put a 60gig (IDE) harddrive in my amiga, partitioned it and installed workbench onto it but the 'Work' partition only shows just under 4gig wheras it should be just under 60gig, and the harddrive light is permanently on as well, is this right??? Yet if i put my original 3gig (IDE) hard drive back in my machine the 'Work' partition show just under 3gig, which is ok.

Is there a maximum size harddrive the A1200 can recognize when using workbench 3.1 as i am???

Any help would be welcome.

Thanx

Steve

i believe 4gb is the usable limit in 3.1, not sure why the drive light is always on though.

The light being on is common when using newer drives.  When I put my Hitachi 20GB drive in it did the same thing.  Running thing through a 4xEIDE'99 adapter made the light go out.  So, if you add a buffered interface it might go out, otherwise it's not a big deal.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

As said million times, maximum usable space of HD is 4GB with the original scsi.device and FFS of the OS/KS 3.1. Maximum partition size is 2GB. You can make bigger partitions or use more space from the HD, but then you blow your system sooner or later when you write stuff over those limits.

So, if you don't update your system correctly, keep them all under those limits!

As for "Jesus On E's" it's the crappiest and overestimated demo ever.. I wouldn't bother to find out if it works or not ;) Check some cool demos from http://ada.untergrund.net/ instead :) Maybe "State of the Art" if you like that kind of music video demos ;)

There used to be a guide on this site about putting in bigger drives I went got a ton of help from some one about it when I restored my A1200 with a 60gig drive.  Works fine and has for a long time.  I wish I could find it again cuz I have a Amiga CD32 with an SX1 I need to repete to process.

Some of us have been having problems with double digit GB 2.5" ATA drives.  Is your HD a 2.5" internal IDE?

After a ton of work I got it working in my CD32 again went to a lot of trouble.  I would be happy to help if you like.  The best way to do this is with a Windows PC and an adapter to plug the drive in to a USB port.  That way you can totaly prep the drive before installing back in the amiga.  Faster and easier to setup.

Franko:

Actually I was asking Claw22000 :-).  I know the ones you were trying to install, and that weren't working, on an A1200 were 20gig+ 2.5" IDE.  It seemed to be the same problem I was having, that the WD800BEVE drive wouldn't work on my A1200.  But, I think it may have been a matter of that drive being DOA, much the same as it sounded like happened with your two 20gig+ drives that didn't work, and not some issue with installing it in an A1200.  I think modern HDs can get killed rather easily if someone mishandles them along the way.  Because now I tried a WD3200BEVE and it works!  Same model, just different capacity.  I didn't do anything differently than with the previous one when installing.  Good thing too, cause I need an HD to web browse on my 1200 again, especially since my old PC just died.

Claw22000:

Neither myself nor Franko has a Win PC with USB.  But that wouldn't have helped unfortunately because we had been stuck with dead drives.  :-(
