I'm sure his is fine, but I have no idea what mask mine is, and I'm just the guy to go shopping for crystals to "give it a shot!"

Just check the top right corner of the processor, the mask/revision info should be there. I've no idea what the limit of other masks are though, only that the E41J is ideal for overclocking.

When I had my first 040, overclocking seemed an intriguing idea and I experimented to see how far I could push it (not far, as it happened). Since then I've never bothered overclocking anything. I just want stuff to work and to have a long, productive life :)

Exactly.
I saw too many turbo boards where users wanted to overclock the cards. Result was a disaster (only some pictures):

And many more.
That is why i highlited that I'm not overclocking, I'm upgrading.

EEEK... After seeing those, I'll stick with 60/240Mhz thanks... :)

As you can see it's worth to say something louder from time to time. :)

Which oscillator does the SCSI controller take it's clock signal from? I always assumed it was the same one as the 680x0, but 72MHz sounds higher than I'd expect it to be comfortable with.

Well, I did not checked this with oscilloscope, but I'm 95% sure that it's 060 oscillator. And it is working @72MHz without any problem. Checked with 3 different SCSI HDD's.

@ stachu100

On my BPPC 060/240Mhz would it be worth swapping the 60Mhz crystal for the PPC side to a 64Mhz crystal I have, or would this not make much difference. I've often wondered if I should give it a try... :)

For 256MHz?  It's a power of 2, how can you resist!?

..unless I have no idea how the crystal relates to the processor speed.

I know, I know, but I just love to tinker... :)

(I thought it was a power of 4)

It is.

4^4 = 256

2^8 = 256

It's also a power of 16!

So, for about the price of a SAM440 you can get almost the same AmigaOS4.1.2 performance plus full Amiga 68k compatibility at 72MHz speed.

Not a bad idea for someone wanting to run both AmigaOS3.x and AmigaOS4.1.2 (soon to be released for the PowerUp boards), but I wish Trevor Dickinson would quit bidding up these eBay auction prices so high!

(how are you Trevor?)

Edit: @ScottJClifford, not $1,000 US dollars yet ($865.61 @ Thursdays conversion rate), but it will probably get that high in the end.
