RAM problem with my A500
« on: November 01, 2010, 05:48:04 PM »
Hello all, I'm having an annoying problem with an A500 I've set up recently and I'm stuck.

My A500 system has:
Kickstart 1.3 v34.5
Workbench 1.3.3 34.34
512k Chip RAM
512k slow RAM in the expansion port
GVP Impact A500-HD8+ with hard drive and 2MB RAM (2x1MB plugged in the two front sockets.)
Mtec 030/14 accelerator with 4MB RAM (does not autoconfig, requires use of Add32Bit tool that comes on the related disk)

Problem:
RAM on Mtec and GVP expansions can not be used at the same time.  I'm forced to disable the GVP RAM with jumpers in the GVP unit otherwise one of these things happen depending on the way jumpers are set on Mtec:

- Enabling the RAM on Mtec instantly causes a Guru (00000004)

- RAM on Mtec is added and the total ram is displayed correctly as 7MB but programs return a 121 error and can't be launched. I'm eventually given a suspend/reboot message.

Am I missing something here?

Here are memory start and end addresses:

GVP:
00200000
003FFFFF

Slow:
00C00000
00C7E7FF

Mtec:
01600000
019FFFF7

Is there anything I can do to use all my RAM or am I stuck with 5MB? I'm not interested in upgrading from 1.3 but please point out if my version numbers are too low even for 1.3 or something. Thanks.

Have you checked the HD partitions mask settings?
Possibly the buffers end up in 32 bit RAM where the SCSI adapter can't reach. Using a mask of 0x00FFFFFC is recommended (24 bit RAM 32 bit aligned).

The problems continue even if I disable the HD with the switch on the case of the GVP unit and boot from floppies.
